Well Folks,

I have a question and who better to answer it than you guys! I subscribe to

several online support groups. Recently the topic of weigh regain came up. A

very nice lady who is 5 years post-op RNY said that there is weight regain for

all surgeries, VBG, RNY, DS (the band didnt come up). She said that she knows of

several DS patients who are 2 + years out who have gained anywhere up to 45 lbs.

Of course my gut reaction was to go to the DS site which is down. I am also in

the process of researching this womans claims via the OSSG older post-op groups.

But I would love to get some input because I think this woman is incorrect. TIA

for any answers

Lisbeth :)

Hi Lisbeth,

I've heard that it does and can happen. However, without the

whole story it can't be put into proper perspective. If someone

eventually gains back 45lbs, is that good or bad? Is that 45lbs

10% or 50% of the original loss? Personally, if I gain back 10%

of my original loss, I'm not going to be crying in my coffee,

because that would still put me somewhere around 150 (and I'm

*really* guessing, as I'm still pre-op).

From what I understand it is not unusual for some weight regain.

However, I've never heard of a DS patient regaining anywhere

NEAR their to their original weight like I have seen with RNY,

VBG, etc. The nurses have told stories of people who have

regained: a man who owned two Mcs franchises and

regained 40-odd pounds...a Pepsi driver who switched from diet

to regular and gained 15lbs...etc. The idea is, I think, that there

is a reason for the gain...it wasn't just " oops, the surgery isn't

working anymore " . We know that in the long term, the body

adjusts to the malabsorption and some bodies may adjust

" better " than others. :) However, without knowing the original

starting weights and losses for those people, I can't put those

gains in the proper perspective. Maybe the Mcs guy was

500lbs, lost 300 and gained 40?? Who knows? But it does

happen.

Also make sure they are talking about the BPD/DS and not the standard BPD

which does not have a restrictive component.

Also I think it is important to talk in terms of % regain. Also, have the

ones with " some " weight regain with the BPD/DS " just lived " or constantly

stressed like some RNY. Not that they want the extra weight, but they

haven't denied themselves everything under the sun and still gained weight.

Also did some of the DS people get down further than the RNY's to begin with.

There has been on occasion people who need to gain a little back.

Lisbeth. I am very interested in your question as well. You spoke

of the Northwest OSSG older post-op groups. How would I go about

finding those.

Thanks

Dawn,

That is a good point you raised. Some people need to gain some weight because

they may feel they lost to much to begin with. This woman on the other hand was

telling the pre-ops that basically with ANY WLS you would have a bounce back of

anywhere up to 45 lbs, which I happen to think is an outrageous amount. I will

see what I learn....I just wish someone who is over a year post op would join

the Graduates-OSSG list and found out how many have had the DS and the amount of

weight regain...I joined the group but because I am not a year post-op I can not

post to the group or to its members....But until then I will continue to dig!
