Guest guest
Can I expect weight loss?Well, I know I've been having to try REALLY hard to gain weight. I'm 5' 4" and 95 pounds, and that's the highest my weight's been...well, actually my entire life, since I got UC and then went on the SCD right around when I SHOULD'VE had a major growth spurt. Then again, if you aren't dealing with digestive problems and can immediately eat all legal foods, it might be harder to loose, but I'm guessing if you just limit cheeses and nut flours you'll be okay. I just recently was able to introduce cheese, which is what is really starting to make me gain weight (finally).I don't know too much about diabetes, but my guess would be that the SCD is a great place to start because it IS such a healthy diet. I think there was a recent discussion on SCD and diabetes...maybe you could check the archives for the past week and see if you can find anything helpful (if the archives decide to NOT be difficult for once =) ) Peace =)Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 75 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 30 mg 1x per day
Guest guest
I think SCD is a healthy eating plan, but there is no such thing as an eat all you want diet. I maintain my weight by eating moderately and exercising. At 54, I could easily gain weight if I wanted to eat all the nut butter brownies I could get my hands on. I think you would have to watch it on SCD too, but it can be done. All you would be missing was fattening starches anyway. People have both lost and gained weight on SCD. Guest guest
, I can relate. I'm 37 and have insulin resistance. The diet does help lose weight, if that's your major concern. It's helped me lose around 20 lbs, although that wasn't my my primary motivation when starting the diet. (I just wanted to heal my IBS problems for good). I read Breaking the Vicious Cycle for the first time in February. I didn't start the diet in earnest until I bought my yogurt machine, and after Easter, last month. I started following just the cursory portions of the diet in preparation (less sugars, less starches, less soy and grains.) I was shocked, when after two months, I lost 15 lbs. After doing the intro portion of the diet, I lost another 4 lbs. This, without going to the gym and exercising. I also notice that my need to constantly eat (since cutting the excess sugar, starches, etc; out of my diet) has diminished. In the past, before the diet, I was always hungry -- even at night. I had to munch on everything, and was always starving by noontime, dinnertime, and late at night. Now, I can eat a small dinner, lunch, or breakfast and be satisfied. I gain my weight in my middle too. My advice, also would be to take supplements (SCD-legal, of course) like cinnamon tablets (which regulates blood sugar naturally), biotin (for fat metabolism), B-12 and a regular multivitamin to help with sugar. The Cinnamon should help the most, since it's been proven to work more effectively than some pharmaceutical medicines.
Guest guest
Thank you so much for your input! To my knowledge I do not have intestinal issues... my sister asked me why I was doing this diet, so that's what made me question. I am doing it because my husband needs it, and to be a support to him, plus I figured it SEEMED to me that eliminating grains and refined sugars would be favorable to preventing diabetes. I do not have diabetes either, I do not know whether or not I have some insulin resistance or prediabetes going on, I really need to get checked, but I haven't had any alarming symptoms other than the weight gain in my belly. I just want to be proactive rather than reactive. I just got to thinking because I'm trying to lose weight, I wanted to make sure that it wouldn't cause me to actually gain weight. So far, I've been losing some though. I appreciate all the input. Sharing your experiences helps me know what to expect and reassures me.
