Guest guest
Have you tried peppermint tea it can be good for bloating, Have you made the homemade yoghurt?. You can buy yoghurt maker online and its easy to make although it takes 24hrs then 8hrs in fridge. Also did you make the chicken soup?. I'm sure you have done and know all this considering your 2 months on scd. Anyway maybe the salad is causing bloating especially if your having uncooked veg with your salad and be carefull with what veggies you are eating it may not be good to eat all types straight away and be sure there cooked well. I'm on Stage 1 and i have eggs every morning for breakfast boiled, poached or scrambled and chicken soup for lunch or whenever im hungry and for dinner i have pureed carrots (only veg ive tried so far) with the following meat (chicken, turkey, salmon or beef patties). Because of the fact i've only been on scd for 2 weeks and have the diorreha and cramping too i will wait to try other veggies for the time being. I also made banana bread which i toast and have butter and cheddar cheese on it which is quite nice. Gonna make sandwich bread soon too!! if you go to youtube theres a lady who shows how to make a lot of scd bread, yoghurt etc, The link is >>>> http://www.youtube.com/user/redwriter1 Also if your worried bout weight loss like i am, everyday i make a smoothie by blending my homemade yoghurt (I make yoghurt with 1ltr Milk + 1ltr Cream for extra calories) with a ripe banana and a tablespoon of honey, This gives me some extra calories and a bit of energy too!! Hope this helps Mark.... (chrons for 13 yrs, on scd 2 weeks now. Meds = prednisolone 40mg and reducing also been on Humira for 5 months which is not working so gonna try LDN next) To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Sat, 24 April, 2010 3:00:25Subject: New to SCD and in need of advice! I am 22 and have had crohns disease for 3 years. Recently I have had a very bad flare up with diarria 30-40 times a day and horrible cramping and vomitting. I am still weaning myself off of 60 mg of prednisone, I am down to 15 at the moment. I am feeling much better than I was but im not at 100 percent yet. I started the SCD about 2 months ago and have been experiencing the worst bloating of my life. I am bloated all day, every day. I have lost 30 pounds during this last flare up but my clothes are still tight around my stomach because I am so bloated and distended. I wasnt eating much these past few months due to the fact that I was so sick, and now that I am eating a normal amount of food I am getting very full very fast and it just doesnt go away. I dont know what to do to make myself more comfortable. Should I be avoiding certain foods even though they are legal on the diet? and if so what are they? I have been eating a lot of eggs, and I have made my own bread from almond flour. I am also eating a lot of veggies and salad which I know are very gassy but I feel if i cut those out I wont be left with much of anything to eat. I would greatly appreciate any advice that anybody can offer me!
Guest guest
This link is the five stages of recovery (what should be eaten in stages on the diet): http://www.cookingforceliacscolitiscrohnsandibs.com/media/Stages.pdf Can be downloaded. I'm not sure what to tell you. Have you looked for soy-free eggs? I saw something on this site that says that chickens are fed soy, and could be responsible for some of the reactions. Also, eggs aren't supposed to be eaten until your diarrhea has subsided (according to BTVC). Raw salad is a definite no no. I was hungry while eating just soup too, but sometimes it's necessary. In fact, I'm going to repeat the chicken soup thing this weekend (although it's going to be chicken matzo ball soup). I'm still at stage one with the diet (only zucchini - peeled and deseeded, green beans and well-cooked spinach), meat and eggs. I'd love to have a salad...but I know that I can't do that now. And dairy (as much as I love it -- my tummy can't handle it.) Even less than a teaspoon of yogurt sends my stomach into a tizzy. You might try taking it SLOW. It's frustrating, I know. But you can eat stuff life lamb, chicken and beef with veggies in the meantime. Also almond flour is a little hard to digest for those of us at the beginning of the diet. Guest guest
Bloating is a sign of fermentation in the gut, which translates into several possibilities: you are eating a food that your digestion can’t cope with, you are eating too much of a food that your digestion isn’t coping with, or your digestive motility has slowed for some reason. I would fine-tune your food choices. Cook everything, don’t eat anything raw – no raw vegetables, no raw fruit. Cut back on the nut flour bread; almond flour can be very difficult to digest. You can eat plenty of the foods your digestion copes with the best, but some foods you may have to stop for a while, or keep the portions small and not eat it every day. If you try to get in more fats you will feel full. Are you able to handle yogurt as yet? Have you tried using a legal L. Acidophilus supplement? Probiotics are critical to our healing, as we want to populate our gut with the better bacteria strains as our “bad” ones die off. Remember that just because a food is on the permitted foods list, or is legal, doesn’t automatically guarantee that our own bodies are ready for it until later on. You have to experiment a bit to find your core group of foods, things that your own body tolerates the best for now. Stick with this core group for a long time until your symptoms are disappearing. Then you can begin to add back some foods. I deal with chronic bloating as I have poor digestive motility caused by a functional GI disorder. Which translates into the fact that I can’t eat more than half of the permitted foods even though I’ve been on SCD for a long time. I can’t eat much or many of the high-carb foods simply because my digestion can’t break them down enough and my bloating (and other symptoms) get worse. I have experienced more frequent phases during my first two years on SCD of increased bloating caused by slower digestive motility (chronic constipation became severe). I finally concluded that it was due to healing phases. I’d just fall back to my intro. diet foods for a day or two, then add back a few of the easiest foods my digestion would tolerate. Then I’d slowly, over months, add a few more foods back into my menu. Eventually I’d be out of the healing phase and I would be fine (from a bloating perspective!) for another few months until the next healing phase. After year 3 on SCD I found that I only experience significant bloating and other symptoms when I try a “new” food that is usually too high in carbs for my digestion. Another possibility is that you are tapering off Prednisone too fast. You might need to stay at a higher dose for another few months, to help your body cope better. Kim M. Guest guest
Hi: I also have Crohn's and came to SCD because of a terrible flare. The first time I tried it, I jumped straight in eating all the foods that were legal. I totally missed the part about intro and slowly introducing foods. I got sicker and wound up in the hospital for a week. Came out on prednisone and did not follow SCD. 3 months later, as I finished my prednisone, the symptoms all came back including the pain (I flip flopped between diarreah (D) and constinpation © leaning more toward C). When my doc told me my only choices were Humria, Remicaid or surgery, I decided to start SCD again because I had felt better. Well, I jumped straight in again. That was Jan 5, 08. I was better but still having to take pain meds to get through the day at work. On Feb 4, 08, I found out about the intro part, re read the book and saw what I had missed. I started intro on Feb 5 and haven't take a pain pill since. One of the most important things for me was going slow. I ate chicken soup, homemade gelatin, and boiled eggs for a while before I could add anything else. For me, I had to cook everything for a really long time for the first few months on the diet. I started with carrots, then zucchini, bananas, apples and so on. It took me 2 months just to work those in. I think you are taking things too fast. 2 years into the diet, I can only tolerate nut flours in small amounts. Since I have a very low level of self control, I rarely make anything with nut flours and don't even keep them in my house. I would sugggest starting over. Go intro and slow introduce things in. It tooks months for me to be able to even tolerate a teaspoon of yogurt or I would get severe die off symptoms. If you have any specific questions, you can always email me off list. When done properly, SCD works. I'm living proof of that Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - 2 years 3 months > > I am 22 and have had crohns disease for 3 years. Guest guest
Hi, One mistake people make is to jump right in and eat everything legal on SCD. Just because something is legal, does not mean you will tolerate it right away. The stages on pecanbread.com are a good guide. Note, this site is for children with ASD who are non-dairy. We can use legal cheese and SCD yogurt. Yes, start back on intro and add stage 1 foods slowly one at a time. Keep a food journal. Carrots are on the intro diet, but I could not tolerate them at all in the beginning. I had to peel and cook all my fruits and vegetables and even puree some of them. Some people don't handle eggs right away. Make plenty of healthy broths and take it slow. I think you will feel better soon if you do this. At the beginning of SCD I looked my SCD cookbooks and thought " yum " , but you can't eat it all at once (but one day you will ). Nut flours are more advanced. I would hold off on those for now. Guest guest
Hi! I think Misty has passed on some valuable experience and wisdom to you. I also wanted to share that I have a severe case of Crohnn's and started the diet with the stages. Even taking things slowly, it's been 7 months and I am still eating everything pretty much pureed and cooked (except for meat and eggs . My point is that this diet DOES promote significant healing and progress, but it can take a long time. You just need some patience! (and some will power and a good blender and food processor- LOL). You can do it! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 25mg Prednisone > > > > > > I am 22 and have had crohns disease for 3 years. Guest guest
Actually I made them with nut flour! Heh. I got the SCD recipe from Comfy Belly's site http://www.comfybelly.com/2010/04/chicken-dumpling-soup.html > >I was hungry while eating just soup too, but > >sometimes it's necessary.
