I think it may be

especially important for people depending upon soy

for protein after having a malabsorption type of surgery.

Coby was on soy formula as an infant. It was easier on his

stomach. We added extra powder to it to make it high calorie the

same you would to any other formula.

,

Max was on a dairy-free diet for years and years. We gave him soy

products instead (watch out for those soy cheeses, though - many do

have dairy in them in the form of caseine - look for the parve

label). A few years ago we found out he was also having trouble

digesting soy. Dr. H. told us that it is not uncommon for kids with

dairy allergies to also be allergic to soy. We switched to rice

milk for him instead. The only thing I have to do is make sure he

gets enough calcium, so I buy orange juice, cereal and other things

that are fortified with calcium not in dairy form. (I don't use

calcium supplements for several reasons - one is his aversion to

taking any other pills no matter what they are for.)

As long as LeeAnn has a well-balanced diet, she will be happy and

healthy. As you have probably seen with your other child, dairy-

free (and gluten free) are not such difficult diets to follow. I

have seen many autistic children do quite nicely on this diet.

By the way, Max is now able to tolerate small amounts of dairy

without the respiratory reactions he once had. He loves yogurt and

chocolate pudding, so we allow him one a day.
