I received this email from a board member. I thought his story was valuable and contained lessons worth learning for all of us. There are times when a cause for pulmonary fibrosis can't be identified easily and then there are times when the cause can be identified but it required persistance. Joyce Rudy is a good example of this.

I read your post about HOT TUB PROBLEMS and I would like to share something with you. I have 2 lung diseases, I first became sick with a lung disease called HYPERSENSITIVITY PNEUMONITIS (HP)from the oils where I worked as a Punch Press setup operator. The oil had been contaminated with a Parasitic Mold which I would breath in every day as I would spray the sheet metal with the oils from a plastic spray bottle and also from the spray from the 550 ton press coming together and forming the parts. After becoming sick with HP my lungs became scarred and continue to scar (PULMONARY FIBROSIS) from the inflammation and side affects of being exposed to the oils. I have a feeling that if some of the people with IPF or unknown cause to their PF would look back at their live that maybe they may or may not figure out

what caused their illness.. HP has changed my life because I can not be exposed to fumes,perfume, smoke,cologne, strong odors like in the shopping isles like laundry soap, bleach,car and truck exhaust.hot and cold extremes in the weather or I am sick for hours and even days and every exposure only causes more lung scarring. HP can come from INDOOR POOLS ,HOT TUBS, MOLDY HAY, BIRDS AND JUST MOLD IN THE ROOF OR STRUCTURE OF YOUR HOME OR WORK PLACE. HP is know as pigeon breeds disease,mushroom works lung, farmers lung as well as work related lung problems from METAL WORKING FLUIDS. I have been fighting this disease since 2003 and also work comp since May 2005 but we have won our case in court as well as the appeal that my work place filed but we are still waiting for another court date to get help with oxygen supplies,meds and my loss of earnings for what is left of my life, I hope that you take

the time to find out what exactly is wrong or may have caused your illness because knowing will help you to avoid the problems and maybe save some of your lungs. I read these posts all of the time I am kind of a back seat driver that watches what goes by but never chime in but I thought that If I can save or help just one person from the life that I have to live like the boy in the glass bubble that maybe that was GODS plans for me to get this disease to begin with because I can not figure out why I would get a disease that has taken almost everything that I enjoyed in life away from me. I am car CRAZY but car exhaust and fumes kill me , I use to ride my TREK BIKE 100 TO 150 MILES ON Saturdays or just on my day off but now just going up the stairs to go to bed kills me. Beth,I can really relate to this, when you think back about all the things that could have contributed to your own breathing problems...from 81-90 my ex sprayed our house in Phoenix inside and out every month to 2 months with a pesticide that is no longer on the market because of its toxicity. I also lived 1 house away from a cotton field. In order to use a mechanical picker they spray the fields every October with a type of defolient similar to Agent Orange! And because I live in a desert and am a good do bee I would brush my walkways instead of washing them down with the hose, another good way to get dust, bird poop, and fungus air borne. I breathed all this in for 10 years and then moved back to Wisconsin where for the first time in my life I actually reacted to a skin prick test for....you guessed it....MOLD. I was only back in AZ for 2 years when I got sick. And the week before I was in the hospital on a ventilator I was sweeping bird poop again. Then of course the whole autoimmune/connective tissue thing comes in to play....I would bet money in Vegas that if alot of us think back we will find these types of exposures. And then it seems like the straw that breaks the camel back is the autoimmune/CTD. We get pulmonary fibrosis where others do not because our own bodies turn on us. I Am My Own Worst Enemy! Dyanne, This Tuesday on NOVA on Public Television, there is a program called

Ghost In Our Genes, in which living next to cotton fields is mentioned. It is a

rerun of my favorite episode. People who have lived near cotton fields have a

higher rate of autoimmune disease. This NOVA program is an eye-opener.

Incidentally, I lived my early years near cotton fields.

Beth- WOW- that was a very informative posting from bruce 351. When I look

back at my life, I taught in a middle school which was (and still is) falling

apart-lots of mold from leaking roofs and heating vents that were never cleaned.

In fact the whole school is the filthiest place I ever worked in. It was there

that I developed asthma in 2005. I used to tell everyone how miserable I felt

and that there didn't seem to be enough air. I was categorized a section 504 and

was supposed to get air conditioning in the rooms where I taught (I was a

traveling teacher). But one by one in each of the rooms the ac units broke and

the administration would not get them fixed, because of money issues. I

consulted with an attorney who said we could sue but it would take years. Anyway

in the summer of 2007, I found a job at a company and now do office work in a

more controlled environment. When I look back now, there were so many of my

students who had asthma too and I wonder if they will end up with fibrosis. I

pray they don't. - nne

Dyanne, When I was a young lad, I would run behind the mosquito truck through

that cloud of DDT (probably). We lived beside a cotton field at two of our homes

in the Mississippi delta, and we had no air conditioning, and our windows stayed

open too, unless it was winter. Most of the NOVA program is about genetic makeup

as our environment shapes it. Only a small portion deals with cotton fields, but

the whole program will make you think differently about genetics. Do you like

buttery popcorn? I breathed Diacetyl every day for over 3 years. Then there is

GIRD. I should be put away for lung abuse.:-)
