Hi Kathy,

You might want to have a look at the Yahoo group Pecanbread. It's a group that

focuses on SCD and autism, and there are lots of parents who can probably better

address your questions.

Dawn,"all these moms of autistic kids were complaining about how nobody

believed them that their kid used to be autistic. I am sure lots of

moms dream about the day they have that to complain about! :) "Thanks for posting that! I love hearing stories like that. My husband, who is doing really well, still isn't sure what to attribute his good health to! He still says it could just be 'the nature of the disease' and that this is just a remission period. Although this attitude is frustrating to me, I understand that it is rooted in another attitude 'could this be too good to be true?' AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, May 12, 2010 4:43:40

And their answer will be a resounding YES. I am a member of Pecanbread although my daughter is not autistic, she has gut issues like me. I enjoyed reading a thread going around maybe a month ago where all these moms of autistic kids were complaining about how nobody believed them that their kid used to be autistic. I am sure lots of moms dream about the day they have that to complain about! :)

Thanks Dawn and PJ! You are too sweet. I hope I don't leave the impression my husband is unappreciative. He is very appreciative of all my efforts, he just thinks most of it is unnecessary! ; )AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, May 12, 2010 4:25:45 PMSubject: Re: Anyone else with autistic kids who have seen a positive change?

Hi Kathy,

I have an almost 7-year-old on the spectrum. we started SCD last summer

after kindergarten and when he went into first grade, he was a different

kid. All his teachers noticed how far he'd come in every way.

Cognitively: Started to read fluently and comprehend texts very well. Started

drawing

very advanced figures etc.

Socially: Only conversed with adults previously. Began engaging with peers and

not just

responding but initiating. (This took about 5 months into the diet.) Would not

even

answer me about how his day was, on the way back home. Now he gives me a

detailed

account of his day without prompting. He is empathetic, considerate and sweet.

Before, he wasn't always nice to his siblings and wasn't as interested in my

feelings.

Now when I tell his, " Mommy's tired because she's been cooking all day. " he

says,

" Mom, make sure you go to bed early and we'll be quiet in the morning so we

don't

wake you up. " On Mother's Day, he made me an incredible book in which he wrote

down the most beautiful stories about me (actual events that had happened and i

didn't

even realize that he cared much about.) He wote, " I love my mom because she

takes

good care of me and bakes the best cakes and cookies. "

OCD type behaviors: used to come home and count unifix cubes every day. Now

he chooses different activities. In fact, most days he asks his brother if he

wants to

play a game. The game usually involves pretend play!

Physically: He is still very thin and his muscle tone is not the best (he has

hypotonia),

but he seems healthier. He doesn't have dark circles under his eyes and his

cheeks are rosy. His hair is shiny and thick. Prior to SCD we were alarmed to

find lots of hair

on his pillow. Likes to play outdoors more. Always resisted going outside,

previously.

We are thrilled with his progress although we do have some issues to work on.

The major

challenge that remains is occasional verbal stimming, but he can control it in

public

for the most part. he is pretty obsessed with the weather and The Weather

Channel

and we are hoping that will improve with time.

We have done SO many different interventions but SCD has been our biggest wow.

I hope you give it a try. It's really hard for mom, but awesome for kids. We are

doing

it for the whole family, except my husband. I have three kids, and they are all

so much healthier for being on SCD.

HTH,

Amazing progress!!! yay!! The empathy and ability to control his stimming in

company is great.

The obsessions with weather may lead him to a future career in science,

environmental science... who knows?

Thanks for posting!
