Guest guest
Hi -- Over the past couple of weeks, I have been reading a huge amount of posts on various boards about the excessive amount of protein DS patients have to consume postop to avoid protein deficiencies. I read one this morning, in fact, that gave this as the reason NOT to have the DS, saying that the risk was just to large and they didn't want to deal with protein deficiency. I was just at my 2 year postop appointment with Dr. Anthone who has been doing the DS for 11 years now, and he said that he's just not seeing protein deficiencies. He said that if I get 40-50 grams/day, that would be sufficient. I've had extensive lab work done seven times since surgery and my protein levels have always been right down the middle. I think the " fear " of protein deficiency is far greater a problem than the " reality " of it. Of course there are always the exceptions, but according to Dr. Anthone, its a concern, not a problem. I also asked him, for my own info, if he's seeing any liver damage, kidney damage or cancers with his long term patients and he said " None. " You asked about supplements... I take perscription Niferex PN Forte which my insurance pays for. My copay is $1.18/mo. I also take two viactiv/day. $5.95/bucket at Walmart. I would suggest, if you feel you want the DS, find a DS specialist, not just a surgeon who will do one for you. It's a lot more complicated than other procedures and really requires a dedicated surgeon. YMMV Hope this helps! heidi http://www.myWLS.com
Guest guest
I have read much literature saying that the American diet has far too much protein in it. There are a number of heath risks associated with excessive protein intake. I think this is a controversial viewpoint, but one with validity. Interestingly, there seems to be a difference between DSers in how easy it is for them to get enough protein in their diet. I don't take any chances and am doing fine. , Seattle . > > I was just at my 2 year postop appointment with Dr. Anthone who has > been doing the DS for 11 years now, and he said that he's just not > seeing protein deficiencies.
