I have read that alcohol and the DS do not mix. Does this mean that

I won't be able to have an occasional drink, or glass of wine? And

WHY is it that they don't? What is the physiology?

This is Dr. Rabkin's take on alcohol:

http://www.pacificsurgery.com/For_Patients/Patient_Binder/

Before_Surgery/alcbefore_surgery.html

" Alcohol causes gastric irritation and can cause liver damage. During

periods of rapid weight loss the liver becomes especially

vulnerable to toxins such as alcohol. In addition, alcoholic beverages,

which are fully adsorbed before and after surgery are high

in calories. We recommend complete abstinence from alcohol for one

year after surgery and avoiding frequent consumption

thereafter. "

Dr. Rabkin askes his patients to sign an agreement to not drink after

the DS. Because of the rewiring of you intenstinal track, I

understand you can get drunk a lot faster, with a lot less. Also,

your liver is working extra hard due to the rapid weight loss and

malabsorption.

Also, most alcohol is highly caloric and they are all empty

calories. Other Doctors request that you drink in moderation. And I

believe their idea of moderation is infrequent and a small quantity!
