Guest guest
Hi Ellen, A good site for you would be pecanbread.com. It is an SCD site for children with ASD, and it is non- dairy. There is a table of suggested " stages " and yes, fried foods would be advanced. We all move through the stages at a different rate, and everyone is different. The stages are a suggestion. Keep a food diary. One example is that carrots are an early food, but I never tolerated them well. It's good to add foods slowly and one at a time to see if you tolerate them. I found with SCD it is best to progress slowly, but as tolerated, with all foods. PJ > > Hi, > > My name is Ellen, I'm a 24 year old female about to start the diet and I wanted to ask some questions. To give you an idea of my symtoms, I have had bloating and gas pressure in my stomach for a the last 2 years, it has progressed to constipation, but this was treated well with amitiza which I continue to take. > > But over the past 3 weeks I have had a couple days each week where I have a little diarrhea, sometimes cramping and spasms and the feeling like food is going through me more quickly than usual. I have felt improvement going to acupuncture but there are a lot of ups and downs and overall it is just temporary relief, maybe a day or two after the acupuncture treatments I feel better than usual in between meals, but eating always gives me some level of discomfort no matter what I eat. > > I have been researching SCD non-stop for 2 weeks, and am pretty sure this is the answer for me - my system needs a real reboot, more than acupuncture could provide alone. I think this is the only way for true healing to take place. > > So on to my questions: I am allergic to dairy, so I can't do the yogurt. I was wondering if Almond Milk or other kinds of nut milk yogurt is a good idea...I want to make sure I am not losing too much weight (already underweight), so I figure this would be a good addition to smoothies and soups at the beginning. > > And if I do make this yogurt, would I also still need to take an acidophilus probiotic that is recommended? Also, is it okay to be consuming nut milk or nut milk yogurt daily? I have seen references that you shouldn't start the nut milk until 3 months after symptoms subside and that is because you shouldn't be consuming too much of the same nuts. If this is true, would alternating between different nut milks, lets say every two weeks be beneficial? > > The other option would be to use coconut, but I read that it is difficult to digest, has anyone had any experience with it? > > And I have one more question unrelated to the yogurt....with introducing foods, are you supposed to be careful with adding spices and cooking oils (olive or coconut) to foods - as in, should I introduce them one at a time and how late in the diet should I do this? And how soon would you recommend starting to fry vegetables in oil as opposed to pureeing them or steaming them whole? > > Right now, in my plan for the diet, I have at least a day between every food addition - even with garlic, olive oil, and coconut oil - is this a wise decision? I have stage three starting a little under 3 months from the start of my diet - is this crazy? I'd love to know how others have experienced it - how slow should I go? > > I'm sorry this got so long - I guess I had a lot of questions! I'm nervous, but really excited to get started on this, my obsession with a diet that will work has really taken over my life. Any advice is much appreciated! > > > Thanks, > > Ellen >
Guest guest
Thank you for responding! Yes, I have thoroughly read pecanbread as well as BTVC, and am going to try to follow the stages closely. I don't want to make a mistake and add the almond milk yogurt too early, I know that Elaine said to wait 6 months to try the almond milk but pecanbread says stage 1 is okay to try it. Do you think 4-5 days after the intro diet is sufficient to try it? And by slowly adding it in...should I start out with a half a cup each day or less? I want to be able to add it to smoothies pretty early on to keep my weight on and I definitely need the probiotics....any thoughts? Thanks! Guest guest
Everyone is different. Much of the advice applies to children with ASD. It's always best to introduce a small amount at first. I think the 6 month rule is for the children with ASD. I know I started right out with the yogurt. It was the first thing I made. Guest guest
Ellen, sorry there aren't cut and dried rules here, but we are all different. You will need to try things, slowly and one at a time to allow for identifying reactions, and just see what works. For myself, I didn't dare try any dairy anything until now and still haven't done yoghurt. For Intro I did what I knew worked for me, cooked and pureed, and got alone fine. It certainly wasn't exactly what Intro tells us to do, I didn't have eggs until recently either. It still works. Thank you for responding! Guest guest
Ellen,Make sure you make your own nutmilk, and not store bought. I haven't yet found a legal store bought brand. You can get really good quality nutmilk bags from amazon.com and I think they come in sets of 3 or 4. That's where I got mine and I love them.Coconut is fibrous and can be difficult to digest, but as usual it's different for every person. The reason a food may be listed as stage 5 vs stage 2 on pecanbread is because of how easy it is to digest, or how well tolerated it is to MOST people, but this doesn't mean everyone. I don't think this applies to coconut milk though, which is actually really good! You can also get coconut oil to cook with, which is great for yeast, inflammation, and high in calories. It's best to go slow, and introduce one new thing at a time to see if you react, and that includes new spices or oils as well.... That was nearly impossible for me so I "cheated" a little and would add 2 new things in at once sometimes. Not a good idea because if you react you don't know what you are reacting to, but if you don't react, then you have 2 new choices to use in your cooking! It's all a gamble. You can try following your schedule and if you start to have reactions to certian foods then just back off a little bit.I've been on the diet over a year and i'm still learning every day. I've made ALOT of mistakes, and I think everyone does, so you just do your best and keep with it. I hope you have good luck!! If you're somewhere on the east coast i'd be glad to help you out in whatever ways I can.-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 8 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 12 pills a day Prednisone 40mg entocort With vit E mixed inBack to intro/stage 1 for now. > > Hi, > > My name is Ellen, I'm a 24 year old female about to start the diet and I wanted to ask some questions.
