Guest guest
Hi everyone. I want to say thanks to all the prayers for Autumn and for the quick advice when I posted Sunday morning. After spending a few hours in the er on SAturday night and getting fluids, then we went back sunday morning and just got home this afternoon. When we got there sunday morn her blood sugar was 60, which I was told was not that low, but she wouldn't even hold her head up or open her eyes all the way, she was pale and lethargic and dehydrated and spilling large amounts of ketones. My brother in law works at the children's hospital in cincinnati and he knows a lot of docs and nurses because he teaches classes and trains them on equipment, so i had an advantage there! He came with me and he even knew the er docs and nurses that morn so we got everything plus some instantly. She was dehydrated, not eating or drinking and the docs really couldn't figure out why. She had strep, ear infect and upper resp but her strep and ear infec where almost gone, she'd been on anitbiotics for 3 days when she had boycotted all foods and drinks. After 2 days we got her to take a little peptamin and finally we got her weaned off her iv and she's taking enough peptamin to keep her going(13 to 15 oz day) but she won't really eat, except for a few bite of mac and cheese tonight, she hasn't eaten solids in close to a week. All her specialists where at that hospital so I had her gi/nutrition specialist come visit and we worked on goals. She is down a pound (months of work!) and is going to keep losing until she finally kicks into gear, but she can run around and play now so she is acting better and she stopped spilling ketones, but again, she needs to drink more and eat! She would scream every time she saw a bottle or cup for days, smack them, throw them, and she wanted nothing to do with food, she threw and hit it when offered and still does! They kept saying try a cracker, but this girl is hard headed, if she doesn't want it, there is no way or any trick in teh book to get her to have it. They also said try sips, but then they witnessed what happens when she is offered sips of anything! I kept her there till she was off iv for almost 24 hours to make sure she could sustain herself, so wish us luck these next few days. Thank God for Peptamin and iv's. This is her second hospital stay for dehydration in a year, I'm sure many of you know what its like! We are so happy to be home! mom to Autumn 14 1/2 mos, 27 inches, now 15 lbs (she looks so skinny), Ocean 2 1/2 lost some weight too due to strep but still doing well, Skye 6 1/
