Beth,

I was getting back to your emails, and thought I might be able to clear up a

misconception here. Your questions..

Do all G-tube kids only eat carbohydrates because of this problem? I assume

they must eat some protein via the mouth.

's formula is considered 100% nutritionally complete. As I posted

earlier, it has protein, fat, carbs, plus added vitamins and minerals. The

problem lies totally with what himself will eat!

He likes to eat things he can control, like crackers, dry cereal, etc... All

Carbs!! He is willing to touch this type of food, and can take very small

nibbles. He finds the texture of ANY cooked meat, in his words " EWW!!!!

GROSS!!! " He won't touch them with his fingers, let alone put them in his

mouth!! He, also, has problems with beans, legumes, hummus, anything pasty,

or gritty, in texture. He gags. So finding a protein source that

will consume orally is tough. We've considered adding a protein powder to

his baby food, to up his protein intake, but we have to talk to his GI about

this first.

For kids with g-tubes, and oral aversions, finding a way to keep their diets

balanced, while attempting to teach them how to eat orally, can really be a

challenge!

Pat,

's eating habits sound exactly like mine!! I was only tube fed (for non

RSS reasons) for a few months after birth until they could repair my cleft

palate and make sure the food going in my mouth was not coming out my nose, but

I had (and in some cases, still have) many of the oral aversions that

has. I wouldn't even *touch* a piece of meat until I was almost eight, and

even today, I refuse to eat any meat that's been ground, anything that is or

even remotely resembles a pork product, and beef. I also don't like anything

slimy, pasty or overly mushy. I spent *years* working on these issues, but

still have them. Even so, I managed to eat a fairly well balanced diet,

although I tend to eat the same things over and over again. That's fine with

me, though, I would rather eat the same thing than eat things I don't like.

Hillary!! Thanks for the input. WHAT do you eat for oral proteins??? Or what

suppliments do you take?? Protein is a necessity, especially with B on GHT,

but other than what he gets in his formula, there's none in his diet. Oh nix

that... I do get him to eat the occasional egg yolk blended into his Stage 2

foods.

Thanks again!
