Hi Signe,

My total cholesterol has been over 200 since I first got it checked

around age 20. I'm 27 now and it's still in the 200-230 range. BUT

when they broke it down into HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels, my HDL

( " good " cholesterol) is the only above-normal level, and my LDL level

is still in a very good range. So, they're not worried about the

total number yet, except I have to get it re-checked every 2 years.

I should probably also point out that both my parents are on

cholesterol-reducing medications even though they're both pretty

healthy people, so I've got genetics working against me too.

Don't know that this helps, but there is another " older RSS kid " out

there with high cholesterol...

I am a 29 year old RSS adult and my cholesterol is really high. Last time i had

it checked it was down a little but still at 215. I've wondered if this has

anything to do with RSS or if it was just me.

-I'm pretty much in the same boat as Ana, except my numbers run a little lower

than hers.

I've had my cholesterol tested 4 times in adulthood...I couldn't tell you the

exact age I was

(except for the last one) but they were, in order, 197, 206, 211 and (just last

month, age

38Y, 9M)) 196 (yay me! <G>). My good cholesterol is very good (high) and my bad

cholesterol is, as well (very low). Family-wise, my father was on

cholesterol-reducing

meds when he was alive and my mother still is. They had very fat-filled diets in

childhood...I barely had food in my childhood <wink>.

Ana - thank you very much for your response. It's very interesting

and reassuring to hear from you. I think that the LDL/HDL levels on

there own weren't too bad but the total cholesterol number really

threw me.

I'm very interested now in this subject and wonder if there is

something about the small size of RSS people that somehow attributes

to the high cholesterol or is it solely based on what they eat.

Both me and Ada's dad are very healthy with normal cholesterol which

is another reason i'm surprised about hers.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living and what

has life been like for you so far?

Teri - thank you for your response and your question is what I am

wondering too. Are you or your doctor worried about it being over

200 or do you think that is normal for you?

Do you eat much in the way of animal proteins and fats? Ada really

doesn't though she does usually pick a deep-fried item when she eats

at school. So, i think we may be looking at adjusting her diet some.

We've always pushed the fattening foods without any guilt - not i'm

wondering if that was such a good idea.

Do you have a pretty good appetite and did you as a kid?

thanks again for your response!

Sharon - i'm beginning to see a pattern here! It seems that the

overall cholesterol is high but the breakdown is okay. Have you had

to make drastic changes to your diet?

I'm wondering if Ada eats too much hydrogenated fats even though she

doesn't eat alot of meat products. I really need to study up on this

stuff.

Congrats on bringing your cholesterol down - I may need to ask you

some more questions about that.

Ken - thanks so much for taking the initiative to call your son's

ped. endo.

It makes total sense to me that our children should have the same

cholesterol checks as anyone else. It really concerns me that our

kids might have high cholesterol - their organs are smaller to begin

with and if that means that it is going to take even less for their

arteries to become clogged then i really want to stay on top of

things. She has been seen by a nutritionist but i'm going to get

back with her to see what she recommends - and when she leaks out

the name of that magic weight gaining/cholesterol reducing food i'll

be sure to sell it to you all!
