Guest guest
We have just discovered that our son's misshapen head is due to positional plagiocephaly. Our doctor has assured us that the shape will be corrected over time. We would like to get a second opinion or some sort of evaluation. Does anyone have any advice on where we should get started? Guest guest
We went to a cranio and cleft specialist. Many places that band also do free evaluations. What area are you in?someone is probably in your area and can give a reccomendation. Angie (Jenna 2003 STAR grad and Ky repo) What to do? Guest guest
Our doctor also told us our son's head shape would correct on its own...it did not. He is actually getting his helmet tomorrow! This is the site I used to find a doctor in our area to get a second opinion from. Good luck! > > We have just discovered that our son's misshapen head is due to positional plagiocephaly. Guest guest
How old is your son? Are there any other conditions, like torticollis, that are causing the plagio? Did you get any good tips of repositioning? I would get a 2nd opinon - and also some sort of starting measurments and pictures so that you can see how the changes are happening over the next few weeks/months. Is there a cranial tech near you? They do evals for free. Also, depending on your sons age, correction may or may not happen. The younger they are the better to see results because the skull grows faster when they are younger. Repo will only work uo to 6 mo. old HTH! Let us know how it goes and what you decide. Jen Mom to Luli - 3 yrs old Torticollis, Plagio, Syringomyelia What to do? Guest guest
If it is mild and your baby is young it may correct on its own, but at a minimum you should work to keep your child off the flat spot, and reposition to the extent possible to encourage growth in the flat area. If his head is severe it is unlikely to correct on its own. My daughter had brachicephaly (flat in back with little asymmetry) and she got a lot of correction from her band. However 4 mo after graduating from her band, we had her checked again and there was no additional improvement. Her head had grown, but without the band growth was all over, and therefore no improvement to the shape. To me this is evidence that heads don't magically correct. Now a few years later, her head looks more or less the same (still some problems, but not noticeable, and far better than before we banded). In terms of specialists, we saw a cranio facial plastic surgeon. -christine sydney, 3.5 yrs, starband grad > > We have just discovered that our son's misshapen head is due to positional plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Hi We too did lots of research on this. Our son had positional plagio caused by torticollis (as a result of being in an awkward breech position pre birth). We spoke to our Doc, paedaetricians and a cranio facial surgeon - none of whom measured his head but all of whom said let nature take its course and the head will be fine. I then spent many hours on the internet and talking to various people involved in plagio forums and support groups. As a result, we concluded that if the case is mild to moderate and doesn;t have some other underlying issue such as tort then repositioning can work if done rigorously and routinely. However, if the plagio measurement is high moderate to severe then a helmet was needed to correct the headshape. We had Dan fitted with a helmet 2 weeks ago at 5.5 months (he was measured at 14mm and it was a worsening condition). In just 2 weeks his measurement is now 8 mm. He has had no problems with the helmet and we are over the moon. I would definitely recommend getting your childs head measured and then make your decision based on those results. Good luck!
