Guest guest
Thanks Theresa!! I find Dr. Rabkin's comments very interesting also.. thanks for passing them along. I hate to admit, but yes I have had some sugar.. not very much but sometimes a piece of regular gum, a mint for my breath (I love onions and garlic..lol) or something else will creep into my diet. I justify this by telling myself that its no where close to what I used to consume preop, and I usually only have fruit aside from the mint or gum, so at least it has some vitamins. I dont know how much this is slowing me down because I cant find a scale to weigh me yet.. I'll try this afternoon, but I think Ive lost about 35 or 40 pounds since surgery.. ) Have a great day!! Guest guest
HI Judie! He said 2500 calories a day???? OMG!! I am SO far into heaven! Guest guest
Hey Sue! Remember, with the DS you do NOT count calories anymore! Those days are gone forever. (If you had the RNY then yes, you should be quaking over the calories lol) Today we are going to town so will have a large chef salad LOADED with turkey, roast beef, ham and 3 different cheeses with thousand island dressing and sunflower seeds and croutons.....and before I hit the lettuce I will have all the protein out of the way.......before surgery I would have to count those calories in order to get anywhere diet wise! Then tonight its fillet mignon.......with half baked potato and butter and sour cream with chives and some broccoli..... doesnt get much better than this! Yes! 2500 calories a day and absorbing half of that! Im already there! Hugs, Judie
Guest guest
Sue, I'll tell you, I really expect to eat as normally as I can once i meet my protein requirements. I do not plan on dieting with the DS. i will, however try to maximize my window of opportunity and, if i have sweet tooth, i am gonna have something small but sweet. The only other option is to deny myself up and until i binge!!! Laughing. The bottom line is not how fast you lose, but how much you lose. Be good to yourself and when i start panicking, please remind me of what I said! It's just so hard to fathom that many calories being ingested and bypassed. Thanks,
Guest guest
Judie, I am confused also. Both Dr. Rabkin and Dr. Anthone seem to agree that there is no way of knowing how much malabsorption one has. Anway you could check with your Doc and ask him what he bases that opinion on, please? Thanks and Hugs, Theresa > > Sue...... > > > > Dr Welker said by the time you are a year out you should be eating > 2500 > > calories a day and only absorbing half of that! > > > > Judie > > Hi Judie, > > Did you hear him say that or were you told that he said that? Guest guest
Great abstract. There is a table (Table 1) showing a controlled study of absorbtion rates of fats, sugars etc. How the absorption rates differ from the BPD to the BPD/DS would be the important question. Overall, it seems about 2/3 of caloric intake in general is absorbed. This would of course be influenced by the caloric mix. Thanks for the info and if you have an opinion regarding the differences in absorption between the two surgeries, I would be interested on your take!
