Telling nosy co-workers (long)

I have come across several posts asking what to tell nosy,

unsupportive co-workers about one's surgery. I offer the following

scenario. This is what I used with my co-workers (RNs and MDs) and

family. It has worked so well that I'm thinking of bottling and

selling it!

Start by muttering that your gastric reflux is keeping you awake at

night, and is only relieved by sleeping in a sitting position. Refer

to this position as " mid to high fowler's position " or " 3-4 pillow

orthopnea " . Insist that your MD has tried you on various anti-acid,

anti-reflux drugs such as Zantac, Pepsid, Nexxium, Prilosec and

Protonix. These drugs were either ineffective, or you suffered severe

vertigo (dizziness) after taking them. Then tell your co-workers that

the only course of treatment left open to you is a surgical procedure

known as a Nissen fundoplication. This procedure is done lap, and

wraps the upper portion of the stomach around the bottom of the

esophagus to decrease reflux.

In my case, I was also fortunate to have a well-documented

paternal family history of gastric ulcers and diverticulitis, so I

threw that in too. As for the WT loss, hey, I've been on a diet

forever, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.Right now, it's

working. Your co-workers don't need to know that it's working

permanently.

Anybody else needs excuses, just post here or email me. I've got some

for every occasion.

Why not tell them the truth? Perhaps they have an MO family member

or friend who can benefit from the fact that you found the DS and

have had great success with it.

Granted, not everyone needs to know (especially if they're

unsupportive or attitudinal)...but if you're comfortable sharing your

story and your success, imagine the impact you can have on others?
