Guest guest
, You have come to the right place. SCD was originated by Dr. Haas as a treatment for celiac. It was replaced by the more modern gluten- free diet that is not nearly as effective. This is because the damaged gut can not handle the other foods that SCD eliminates. Elaine was brilliant in realizing that all damaged guts end up at the same place: food intolerance, bacterial overgrowth, autoimmune problems. It is no wonder that there is so much confusion between the various diagnoses- IBD, celiac, etc. Since celiac is your original problem, you are very likely to respond well to SCD. Remember though, that years of damage take time to heal. In time, you will adjust to SCD. It seems expensive at first, buying different food and equipment, but I am not spending nearly as much at the grocery store as I did when I first started. I can find legal foods on special, and I know what brands to buy. It takes time and practice but you will get there. Cookbooks are nice but there are a lot of recipes on line to try. Look at pecanbread.com for helpful ways to progress on SCD. It is a site for kids with ASD and they are non dairy- but you can have legal SCD yogurt and legal cheese as tolerated. Don't worry about ordering nut flour. That is costly but it can wait, as it is more advanced and they can be ordered in bulk. People often post sales on food and equipment here. Start slow with simple broths, eggs, SCD yogurt and cooked fruit and vegetables. Hang in there! PJ > > Hi, > > I was diagnosed with Celiac via bloodwork 7 yrs ago. Have had the runs for 8yrs. Last year went thru food allergy testing - 25 food allergies. After trying everything it seemed. Finally had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done. Found I am still ingesting gluten - somehow... been strictly gluten free for 7yrs - not sure where - working on finding it. Then had a camera endoscopy - found usual inflammation in my small intestines, colon etc. I am on prednisone to try to reduce the inflammation, my GI wants me to consult with a rheumetologist to see if my lupus diagnosis from 21yrs ago was actually IBD. The GI doc ran bloodwork - I flagged for crohns, ulcerative colitis and IBD, lupus looked fine there. I am on my own until I see the Rheumetologist the end of this month. I am on 40mg prednisone for now. I have been doing research and found the SCD diet and pondered for a while and decided to give it a try. I am waiting for my copy of Breaking the Vicious Cycle to arrive. I am just hoping this helps. Today was rough for me. I still feel so hungry - I have had grilled burgers, roast chicken, sauteed chicken. With my flat villi, I also have to be dairy-free. I reacted to eggs in the allergy test, tried to reintroduce, no luck. These 2 will make this diet tough. > > Any hints, suggestions, glimmers of hope - most welcomed! I don't mean to sound down, I guess it's all the timing - finances are at an all time low etc. When it rains it pours. I will survive! I know it's all for my own good! > > I'm excited to read all that is on this site! Thanks for listening! Theresa >
Guest guest
Joanna, I was told that the gluten can stay on pots and pans - get stuck in the little chips on the pan, or that line you see around the inside of your pan, it's gluten. I have my own pots and pans now, I have a few plates and silverware that is all mine. I have my own storage container, I hand wash all my dishes so they don't get mixed in with the rest of the family's stuff. I removed all flours from the house that are not GF, no mixes can be used that are not GF. I was told that the flours can stay in the air up to 48hrs. My family still eats gluten, but it's not " flying " around anymore. I wish I had just turned our family GF! Sometimes I feel so alone, the good part, I don't clean up after them very often, it's pretty much all theirs. I have recalled companies to check on gluten status, found a few foods that are not considered GF! A start. I also use a software from the Clan - it helps. I have added much to my own list. I also use only GF products on my body. I have my own hand soaps, lotions etc. My dish detergent and dishwasher detergent are GF. If you have any questions - please feel free to email me personally - treebakesgf@... Theresa
Guest guest
Thanks Everyone! I feel so much better already. Yes, I know it will all take time. One doctor feels I may have had this since I was a little girl - at 49 now, I guess that's a lot of years! I can't tolerate eggs, which will be a challenge with many of the recipes I've seen, I am used to substituting applesauce and Baking powder, or flax meal and water. I was told to stay off dairy, I did leave a message for my GI dr to clarify if its dairy-free or lactose-free that he wants me to be on, with my flat villi. What have others done? I enjoyed my chicken soup today. I know we are not to have carrots/onions etc. I cooked it with it, but I didn't eat them - I hope that's okay. It just gave flavor. I made the grape juice jello - it was still thin, but it was a nice treat! Is fresh fish good for me during the intro diet? I love fish, well, I love it deep fried - another time... hee hee Thanks again! I am glad I found this site! You are the best! Guest guest
Hey Theresa, welcome :)I just wanted to chime in that yogurt is very helpful, so if you can eat dairy (just not lactose), that'd be great! But if you can't eat dairy, you might want to look into other ferments that people use - I think some try and substitute cabbage juice, I don't know too much about that someone else might. I think the yogurt is still better though! And if you can tolerate it, I would def try eating the pureed carrots on intro - you need the carbs/vitamins if they end up being a problem, some people try steamed zucchini as substitute, but give the carrots a good shake first I find if I'm eating carrots outside of the soup, if I cut them with water it helps Again, welcome, and best wishes Hi Theresa, and welcome. I'm a year+ into SCD, and I've been egg-free since I discovered that my lingering d at the beginning of the diet was from the eggs I ate every morning. I also couldn't tolerate the yogurt at first (way too much bloating and gas) and it took me a few months of slowly weaning myself onto it to get up to roughly a half cup a day. I've used vinegar and baking soda as my leavener when baking. I've also found pheasant eggs at one of my local markets and have been successful about using them in baking, also (not quite prepared to sit down to a plate of scrambleds, however). I know a few folk here and on Pecanbreak also use duck and quail eggs. I've also tried chicken eggs (both yolks and the whole egg) a few times recently. I wasn't side-effect free (some headach-y stuff, some bad feeling, and some gas), but it didn't cause d and I will continue to try to add eggs in the future. Be careful on the fish. I was eating it regularly my first six months of the diet, but it seems to have a naturally (or perhaps it is my local supermarket where I was buying it) occuring higher levels of bacteria, and it threw me for a loop (yellow d for days) a few times. I've been off of it for a while now, but will reintroduce using only frozen (and I have seen a few people say they even react to the frozen). Good luck!! I hope SCD works miracles for you, like it has for me. Ellen > > > > Thanks Everyone! > > I feel so much better already. Yes, I know it will all take time.
