Guest guest
Hi Holly and welcome aboard. When I took my son off of casein I saw a withdrawal, so that is what you saw as well, tho a cold may have helped too He's gotten better with hyperness and attention, and after a while he was not too tantruming anymore. After gluten removal, and after the withdrawal period passed as well, I saw my son making great eye contact, answering to his name and becoming more compliant. He also bettered his stools (sorry, but it is part of the deal), and improved his appetite, and variety of foods that were eaten. At first when the diet began, I thought he was getting even pickier if that was possible. Instead I learned he was having a withdrawal, so he was just refusing anything else that wasn't g or c. Of course, he was and still is after almost six months on the diet, trying to " get high " with other things like phenolic foods (tomatoes, cucombers, fruits etc), to which he reacts as well, so I have to limit those too. I am also probably not one of the best people to advice on what results I saw, b/c I almost put him on the diet cold turkey, so I saw a short withdrawal for casein, but then he was having a bigger withdrawal for both. I put up with lots of tantrums and screaming and staying up late at night, and night waking, and pooping everywhere (I now start believing it was a protest, besides that a need for attentions), and chewing and destroying things (mostly, his books were getting torn up, or some non chewable toys were being chewed to death). I also started shortly after (maybe withing the first month) to supplement with calcium, DMG and SNT, so I threw that in the picture as well, just to make my life a little harder as if it wasn't enough (LOL). I saw great improvements at that point, and it was like if the diet had finally bloomed when I gave him the supplements as well, b/c those gave him what he wasn't getting (vitamins and minerals), and I believe that was blocking him from " coming to surface " . It still isn't easy, but it does get better, so just hang in there. You know, you choose a hard path, that mnany parents rather not follow, so be proud of what you are doing for your son, and one day he'll be able to thank you for it. My children react badly to fruits, so you can consider that your children are reacting to the fruits and that is why they want the juice. Or they may have yeast issues and crave the sugars from the juices. But work on gfcf first, then you can look into other food issues. For about a week after I took them off milk they > both refused to eat and both were very crabby. We also had colds so > that could be part of it. I did not notice much if anything from removal of milk, but just a small almost imperceptible difference that made me go for the gluten removal also. My children are much more gluten intolerant. I would eliminate wheat too, > but I am waiting for peptide test results before I tackle both. We > have a lot of behaviors and I am trying to rule things out one by > one. Doing things one at a time is always recommended, otherwise you can't figure out which things are good and which things do nothing or make things worse. Also, if you want to do a celiac test, your children have to be eating gluten at the time of the test, so best to do it before removing it. Guest guest
What kinds of positive things have any of you noticed by just eliminating milk? My son spoke his first new words within three days of eliminating milk. His bowel problems clerared up, his hyperactivity was much improved, and he could look me in the eye and focus on what was around him-I noticed he wasnt spinning himself in circles near as much . I got such wonderfull results, we eliminated wheat about two weeks later. When I started the diet I had the mind set just to do milk-and thought to myself maybe I wont ever have to do gluten{It scared me to death} but seeing what a difference it made-I jumped right in to removeing gluten and he has made steady but slower gains ever since. When we started he was functioning at a nine to twelve month old level in all areas and now a year later he is functioning at a two yr old level-he is three but I have hopes he will catch up to his peers in time. My son still has autism and always will be different but he is happy now and is able to learn and speak and I have come to a place where I can celebrate his differences because they are part of him and make him special. Good luck and welcome.f
