Guest guest
I occasionally enjoy a glass of white wine. I take about two ounces of wine and add seltzer to it and make a spritzer. When having Mexican at our favorite restaurant, my husband and I always order Margaritas. Now, I only take a few sips and pass it over to him to finish. Alcohol definately affects me more post-op than it ever did as a pre-op. But, I find no harm in having a few ounces of wine on occasion and do so without guilt. Guest guest
> What have other post-op's experienced with alchohol? During the rapid weight loss phase, our livers are working hard, and we don't need to added stress of alcohol going through it. Dr. Rabkin requires his patients to sign a contract stating that they will refrain from alcohol consumption during the first year post-op, and asks them to drink lightly or not at all from that point forward. One friend who is 2+ years post-op had her labs taken the day after she had a cocktail, and her liver tests came back whacked out. On a retest, they were fine. But the scare was a heads up that the liver isn't unaffected by even a single drink! I'm 2+ years post-op, and have a cocktail maybe once a month -- a rum punch or a margarita. One drink is all I want, and it makes me feel like 2-3 drinks would have made me feel pre-op. Any buzz I get is over with fast -- the alcohol seems to hit me fast and leave just as fast, often leaving a headache in its wake. So, I don't drink often, and only very lightly when I do. I waited for 3 months post-op before I had anything. My first drink was a strawberry daquarie. I told them to make it weak and I drank about 1/3 of it. I have had one other drink since then and I drank about 1/2 of it over a 3 hour period. I did notice that even that little bit of alchohol affected me. I figure as long as I make sure I don't drive even when I only have half of a drink, I should be OK to have something occasionally. What have other post-op's experienced with alchohol? >> Kathy M: My experience has been similar. I was almost 9 months out before I touched anything alcoholic. I decided to try this cool Belgian beer my brother had. I could only drink half a bottle and it was delicious. I ate it with pizza. I did get quite a buzz from that amount, though! And, then I had one of those little white zinfandel bottles (mini-size) the other night after dinner... it also gave me quite a buzz on such a small amount. I have three more of those mini-bottles left and I think I'll just have them sparingly with special meals every now and again. The size would probably be equivalent to one glass of wine. I wasn't a big alcohol drinker pre-surgically (although I did enjoy wine with meals, etc. -- my dh doesn't drink so I never bought a bottle of wine b/c it wouldn't be shared or even finished! LOL). Now that I've discovered the mini-wine bottles, I can enjoy some with my meal every now and then or with cheese and crackers... I certainly don't want to get into a weekly habit or a nything at this point... I realize that alcohol is NOT advised (and then there's debate about it) until at least one year post-op. I just have had limited experience with beer and wine post-op and have enjoyed the little amount I drank with meals, etc. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Guest guest
> I am almost 8 months post op and have a drink on an occasion. Usually is an iced margarita and I sip it so I don't get a cold headache. When I have two drinks, I really feel it. I would plan on drinking lightly, only one or two drinks at the most. My labs have been excellent. I wouldn't drink anything until you are 6 months post op or so, your body is working too hard going through the rapid loss faze to add an extra burden. One nursed drink should be fine. > > I'm going out this Friday night so I'm interested in this thread...I plan on > having one drink and nursing it just from what I've heard so far...I'm not a > big drinker to start and my boyfriend rarely drinks so it shouldnt' be hard!! > > > ~*~ AJ ~*~ > Bellingham, WA > Age 37 5'8'' Open DS > self pay - Dr Baltasar -Alcoy Spain > 07/24/01 BMI 64 415.1 > 08/24/01 BMI 58 386.5 -28.6 lbs! > 09/24/01 BMI 55.8 367.1 -48.0 lbs! -37.75 inches > 10/24/01 BMI 52.6 346.0 -69.1 lbs! -50.0 inches > 11/11/01 BMI 51.0 336.0 -79.1 lbs! -63.0 inches > My profile: > http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/profile.phtml?N=E982002956 > My website: > www.wls4aj.homestead.com > > > > > >

AJ, First of all, have a great time Friday night. Remember the old joke with the punchline: " Well, who said that you have to drink or smoke to have fun... " ? Dr. Elariny addressed the question of drinking at group this month. Aside from the assault on the liver during periods of rapid weight loss, the other problem posed by alcohol is the possible contribution to ulceration there the various parts of the intestine have been re-connected. So, he recommended (1) waiting at least six months, and (2) drinking very little and only diluted alcoholic beverages, that is, beer, small amount of wine or a mixed drink, but NOT straight shots or undiluted alcoholic drinks like martinis. So, remember, you don't have to drink or smoke to have fun. <chuckle> Have fun! --Steve --
