Guest guest
, My family agrees with Tyler. Whole wheat pasta just does not cut it for them. They will eat brown rice (not , though) and couscous (again, not ), but give them whole wheat pasta and they run in the other direction! When I make mac and cheese, I do not use the boxed kind anymore. I make the pasta then set it aside. I then mix some milk, butter and cheese together, soften it in the microwave and add it to the pasta. For Max, I have to use margarine that is parve, dairy free cheese and rice milk. (Yuck.) They love the stuff. In fact, I am making it with my class on Monday because it ties in with some things we have been studying - Jefferson brought over the first macaroni, he named his horse Macaroni as an affectionate name, hence the meaning of macaroni (a complement for something that looks nice) AND dental health, getting calcium into your body. Sometimes I try to mix in whole wheat pasta with the regular. I think how long I cook it determines how well it is received. I still have to use mainly the regular stuff. At least the way I make it is healthier than the stuff you buy in the kits. I LOVE Whole Foods and am so glad that it is 5 minutes from here. Trader Joe's is 10 minutes in the other direction, so I have a win/win situation. The problem is that their stuff is so expensive for the most part. (Rice milk is cheaper at WF than any other place around!!!!) It is getting easier and easier to find foods that don't have trans fat. It is something that I read about in Time magazine. I don't remember if the FDA had anything to do with it or if it is the next food craze. It does make me feel better, though, to know that these awful fats are being eliminated from our diets.
