Guest guest
Hi , I wish I could answer your questions but I cannot. My experience is very limited. I think your on the right track with a psychologist. Hopefully you will get some answers soon. One thing my son has is Sensory Integration Dysfunction. With that he would avoid other kids and not talk to them because he could not handle the stimulation. I vaguely remember that it caused some other odd behaviors that did not seem related. Maybe, you might want to look this up and see if any of the characteristics sound similar. Other than that, I have no other suggestions. It sounds like there are multiple things going on and after you get a handle on one, then the others can be diagnosed and treated. Hopefully others on the list will have some more meaningful suggestions. Good Luck Ken M > > HI everyone. I need parent ideas about my non rss son. Guest guest
Hi , In many ways Skye sounds like my RSS child . is also open/close in/out. He plays with toy cars, but only to put things in and out. The one time he tried to drive the car around the floor and go vroom vroom I couldn't believe it. is currently obsessed with phones. He needs to carry one and talk on it. He runs up to strangers and asks for their cell phones. I am holding off testing for now, since he is already in a structured preschool and I dont' want to give the elementary school (he is starting kindergarten in the fall) any more amunition to keep him out of a mainstream class. However, I fully believe he is PDD (pervasive developmental disorder). This is in the autism spectrum although it does not look like classic autism. Good luck, Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 5 year old twins
Guest guest
Hi, My non-RSS son also has problems that aren't diagnosed yet. It's so frustrating. At least with the RSS kid, we have a name for it and we know where we belong. I've joined so many support groups for my older son trying to diagnose him myself and figure out what the problem is so I can help him! Your son sure sounds like he might be on the autism spectrum, and it's a very wide spectrum. There's a Yahoo group called ShadowSyndromeKids that might be helpful to you. Good luck! Guest guest
, In many ways your son sounds like my son, Steve. When Steve was young, he had many odd behaviours. He obessesed over toys, or household appliances, he even went on a long, long jag over quarters. Examining each one with a magnifying glass and sorting them according to tiny differences. As he grew older his obessions changed to various games. At 9 he was obssesed with this game where you stacked pieces together to make a course for a marble to traverse. Day after day, notebook after notebook of configurations, speeds and marble colors. When he was 15 he was one of the best young Magic (the card game) players in the country, he even won a small college scholarship from it. He used to sit around for hours and hours playing Magic against himself. I used to wake up at 3 in the morning to the sound of him shuffling his Magic deck. Many people (including my father) thought this meant that there was something 'wrong' with Steve, but I recognized it as the behaviour of a gifted child. It turns out that Steve does in fact have a high IQ and he views the world differently because of it. Gifted children tend to have a hard time with social inter-action because they don't see much purpose in it. They tend to get very focused on figuring out every little facet of their latest obsession They think that's the only meanigful thing to talk about. Then they can't understand why other kids are completely uninterested in the conversation, because to a gifted child this is the most fascinating thing in the world and everyone should be just as interested. While he was growing up I tried to focus on helping him build his social skills. It was very hard at first and took a lot of explaining. Luckily kids like this are very logical and if they understand *why* social skills are important they will make an effort to use them. I started small with just one friend that I picked out for him in his Kindergarten class. This kid was also somewhat less socially skilled. I helped them play together the first few times. Eventually they were able to play together without me. After a year or two I was able to get him to interact with other kids and even have birthday parties for him. Now Steve is 19 years old, an honor student at Ohio State University and has an active social life. So my advice is to help Skye with the social skills and not worry about the fascination with how things work and interact. He sounds gifted to me. Steve wasn't officially tested until second grade. I'm not sure, but if I remember correctly they can't get an accurate IQ test result before then. If you'd like I will look around and try to find some of the books I had about gifted children. I'm sure they've written even better ones by now though. I recommend checking a few out of the library and trying some of the techniques in there and see if they help. , Aunt to 1 RSS and Wyatt 3 > > HI everyone. I need parent ideas about my non rss son. Guest guest
Have you checked out the definition for aspergers syndrome? I have just been reading up on it as my 20 year old cousin was just diagnosed with it (we always wondered why he was different, but our family just never discussed it). That syndrome does have eye contact, and verbal. But many kids are misdiagnosed OCD. There is no hand flapping as you would expect with autism. I would really wonder about getting a second opinion. It seems that you and Skye's teacher have a better understanding. I think I would research it more and get a second opinion. Let us know what you find out. Guest guest
, There is a great book called " The Out of Sync Child " . It explains Sensory Integration Disorder. They are finding that a lot of kids in the autism spectrum have SID. A good OT would help you figure some of this out as well. Good luck. Beth H. Mom to Matt > > HI everyone. Guest guest
Hi Cindy, It's so true. The hardest part of this is not knowing what to do because I don't know exactly what is going on. Traditional methods just don't work and I don't know what to do, and all I want to do is help him, especially now because he is really struggling to make it through kindergarten. His psychologist seems to not be concerned about any form of autism because it's not classic and there is eye contact..but he has so many life interfearing austistic qualities, so I don't know... good luck to you with your struggle and thanks for the group...i will check it out. mom to Autumn RSS, Skye, Ocean and baby on the way > > Hi, > My non-RSS son also has problems that aren't diagnosed yet. Guest guest
Hi Debby, thanks. I have looked up aspergers and pdd and he does have SO much from it. it says it can go along with ocd and sensory issues but i keep reading with aspergers that they don't have eye contact and talk monotone and are not affectionate, and he is none of those. I've read there is mild aspergers where everything is not there but I seem to be reading info than the doc is giving. he said when he meets the kids, they all have something about them and skye doesn't have it (for aspergers), and along with this autism rating scale...jilliam scale I think, but the questions asked with that scale didn't seem to cover any mild form....I think aspergers is definitly a possibility or pdd. My mother in law is a teachers aid with aspergers children in elementary and when I told her what was going on she said she'd been concerned for years but kept trying to convince herself it wasn't because of the affection and eye contact, but shares the teachers and my concerns. It's hard to find a good doc that can look outside the 'classic' autism. As for Skye being 'different' that's the word used for years for him. Everything was 'different' and we didn't know why. HE was my first so I dismissed a lot due to phases, or age or just different but as he got older it just progressed to the point one day I really woke up and said to myself, wow, this is past just 'different' there is something going on here. and now in his first year in kidergarten it is worse and something has to be done so he can make it through school. Thanks for your response and I am definitly looking into a second opinion mom to Autumn RSS, Skye, Ocean and baby on the way > > Have you checked out the definition for aspergers syndrome? Guest guest
Hi . Skye is very smart, but his problems go beyond social. He has many other...I guess the word would be 'issues' that are affecting him and he is having a hard time. He's struggling to complete papers at school and brings home work half done because without questioning/directions/being told exactly how to do something, he can't do it. Can't put his coat on, push in his chair, sit on the carpet etc without a bunch of questions because he doesn't know what to do.It's getting worse, so bad his teacher called today and they just don't know what to do anymore. He has the knowlege to do the work but not the ability to know how to .....doens't make much sense but it's hard to explain. He can count past 1000 read, letters, sounds...everything required and beyond but can't really apply the knowledge. He also has so many sensory/ocd problems that everything from a meal to getting dressed to just watching a movie or hanging out is a struggle and constant problem. Without help, he won't go through to 1st grade and I think there is definitly something going on. He just doesn't 'get' common sense stuff. His face goes blank then he'll ask me some question about something totally unrelated and not even realize what we've talked about. But it is true that with this obsession applied to something....he will master it beyond belief. mom to autumnRSS, skye ocean and baby on the way > > > > HI everyone. Guest guest
, An OT is an Occupational Therapist. A good one can give you a questionaire to fill out about sensory issues that can show if Skye has problems processing the sensory information coming at him. Then they can start working on helping him cope. You will probably have to ask around for a name, the school may be able to help. But my pediatrician had to write a prescription for " Evaluate and Treat " and then we had to see if insurance would pay for it. Mine does, but the OT has to bill it under " Muscle Incoordination " since my insurance doesn't cover sensory issues. ANYWAY - our school here does not have an Occupational Therapist at the school. She will come in and evaluate Matt for school issues, ie handwriting, but he can't get any sensory therapy at the school, that is all private. Email me privately or on the list if you have ANY questions. Beth H. Mom to Matt > > > > > > HI everyone. I need parent ideas about my non rss son. Guest guest
I know an asperger's child and he certainly does have eye contact and is affectionate and is not monotonal so I am not sure that that is an accurate decription. Or maybe, like so many things, there is a range.... The obsessive stuff though....that sounds familiar! Conny, great-aunt to > > > > Have you checked out the definition for aspergers syndrome?
