Hi all,

Yesterday was our meeting with the committee on special education

for and 's IEP's for kindergarten.

I have to say it went MUCH better than expected. Since was

two, our school district has been saying that they didn't think they

could handle his needs for kindergarten. I was all geared up for a

fight because I didn't want him sent out of district. Well, the

chair of special ed starts the meeting by saying " I am so happy to

be here. For those of you who don't know, since first came to

our attention we didn't think we could accomodate his needs, and now

look at us setting up his IEP. " It only got easier from there.

is going to be in a mainstream class for part of the day. He

will be pulled out for two, 45 minute blocks into a self-contained

class. For the 04/05 school year, there were two kindergarten

children in this type of program. Assuming there are two

kindergarten children for next year, when and the other child

are in the mainstream room, there will be an extra teaching

assistant with them. Now, we can't be sure if there will be one

child, two or three. They won't put more than three together in a

mainstream class. This TA will also be with for snacks and

meals. We made it very clear to them that needed someone to

make sure he eats.

will also get PT, OT and ST 2x/week. They will also have the

school psychologist stop by and make sure he is doing ok. The

really funny part is that the PT he will have next year is the same

PT he had at home when he was in EI. She worked with him from age 5

months to 2 years when he started school based EI.

As for Becca (non RSS, emotional issues) she is going to be in a

collaborative class. This is a mainstream class with a few kids

like Becca who need just a little bit extra. A special ed teacher

will work with the classroom teacher to make sure these kids are

getting what they need. Personally, I am still a little concerned

because unless Becca has a personal cheerleader I think she will

have problems. Becca will also get PT, OT and counseling.

I am waiting to receive the IEP in writing to make sure it all

matches up with what we agreed to.

Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 5 year old twins
