Guest guest
Ellen I gave Amitiza a try as well, but my immune system rejected it. It works very much like Miralax, retains water in the stools. So you may not need Miralax. But you will need extra water, and probably boost your electrolytes more often, as a result of using Amitiza (or Miralax). The muffins referred to in Elaine’s constipation protocol are nut flour muffins, perhaps the zucchini muffin recipe included in BTVC. That is the type of nut flour muffin I made during my first year on SCD when I was dealing with high levels of candida and needed a less-sweet muffin. Nut flour muffins can be constipating for some, helpful in dealing with constipation for others. So you may need to test muffins to see which way your body will go. My experience during the first year on SCD when I was also on Zelnorm (motility med.) and Miralax was that I still went through bouts of severe constipation despite taking the medications. I decided it was due to detoxing, die-off and healing phases. Things improved the longer I’ve been on SCD in that respect. Now I just get bouts of severe constipation a few times a year either because of my cranky nervous system or my Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. I can’t touch grape juice (or grapes) or bananas. My upper GI won’t tolerate either or both, triggers major Sphincter of Oddi symptoms. I do well with orange or apple juice (make my own most of the time), although I do dilute it significantly still. If you are noticing reactions after eating bananas or grape juice, then I’d switch to different fruits. Whether you’re also dealing with yeast depends on the reaction you’re getting, though. On the other hand we all deal with high yeast levels to some degree since we have slow digestive motility and/or digestive disorders. Kim M. SCD 6 years Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction 6+ years neurological & spinal deterioration 3+ years >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> She is quoted in the constipation protocol lined out on pecanbread, she says to try one muffin a day along with a few stewed prunes as you are starting the diet, and eat legal pureed fruits and vegetables - and if this doesn't work to try prune juice with orange juice, and there are additional methods she recommends. I'm on Amitiza for constipation. I take it once a day with breakfast. Miralax, I'll probably try that soon. I've tried it in the past, and it does work, I just never could find the right balance - I was either going too often of not enough. I think I may have developed a yeast problem - since I started the diet, I've been having cravings and reactions to bananas and grape juice. So I stopped the grape juice, and am only having 1/2 or 1 banana a day, but still getting the reactions. But I'm worried I'm not eating enough fruits. It may also be mainly die-off since I just started 5 days ago.
