Guest guest
Hi . I don’t know if any of the folks from the NIOSH funded agricultural centers have contacted you, but these centers would be good resources for you. For instance, I know the Northeast Center for Agricultural and Occupational Health has done some very interesting interventions with blueberry rakes (used to harvest wild blueberries) and apple buckets. Their efforts have involved broad coalitions of stakeholders from the farmworker to the grower to the clinician. http://www.nycamh.com/ The Pacific Northwest Center for Agricultural Safety and Health has been very involved in bringing about policy and regulatory changes and assisting with the implementation of these changes. Specifically, the Cholinesterase Monitoring Program in Washington State is an excellent example of an impressive policy change that is and will address the behaviors of those who influence the work environment. http://depts.washington.edu/pnash/ The National Children’s Center for Rural Agricultural Health and Safety has an interesting project that targets those who hire adolescent farmworkers http://www.marshfieldclinic.org/nccrahs/ I am sure there are other examples from within these centers and from the other NIOSH Ag centers as well as others out there who are doing good work. Also, MCN is involved with numerous environmental and occupational health projects focusing on changing behaviors of clinicians who serve farmworkes as well as more direct EOH interventions with farmworkers and promotoras. If you are interested finding out more about MCN’s activities, let me know and I’d be happy to further discuss our projects and results. I think the list serve would welcome hearing about what you find out. Amy Amy K. Any information, literature, or leads would be helpful. I am particularly curious about whether any programs have aimed to change not only at the occupational health and safety behaviors of farmworkers, but also the behaviors of the people who influence the work environment (ie: growers, supervisors, crew leaders, policy makers, etc). Also, I am looking for any occupational health studies that utilize an eco-social perspective (from Social Medicine) to analyze the causes of disproportionate occupational morbidity among farmworkers in the United States.
