Guest guest
Amber,I would try using a normal incandescent light bulb -- they do give off heat that is why they are 'not energy efficient.' You should only need a 60 watt or even less depending on the size of your oven.Amelia. To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Tue, May 4, 2010 2:32:14 PMSubject: help with making yogurt in oven I have a yogurt maker, but it doesn't make big batches, which leads me to making yogurt every other day. I keep going back and forth deciding between getting another yogurt maker or a dehydrator, but I'm not sure I want to spend the money yet. Anyways, I tried making yogurt in my oven last night. I switched out the bulb to a 75 watt and left the light on. When I checked the temp of the yogurt this morning, it was only 80 degrees. So I turned the oven on to the lowest temp for a few minutes and it did get up to 100, but when I checked it later, it was going down again. How do you keep the temperature high enough in the oven? I am using one of the newer energy efficient light bulbs, so I'm wondering if maybe that doesn't give off enough heat? I had a really hard time believing that any kind of light bulb would keep the oven to 100 degrees, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Does anyone have experience with making yogurt in the oven? I'd love to frugal and be able to make large batches of yogurt in the oven if possible. Thanks! Amber
Guest guest
Hi Amelia, Thanks for the tip! I thought it may have something to do with the light bulb. I will try the incandescent bulb and see how it works. Thank you! Guest guest
It works fine. Use 60, not 75, which will be too hot. Mara > Hi Amelia, > > Thanks for the tip! Guest guest
I can't part with my oven for 24 hours so I've never used it for making yogurt. But I've heard it's pretty simple if you just replace the oven lightbulb with a 60W incandescant. Just be sure to change back to the oven bulb before you use the oven for baking again. Guest guest
Thanks, Mara and . I'll try a 60 watt. If I'm making a lot of yogurt and therefore have more that I need to heat in the oven, do I still just keep with the 60 watt? Or do I need to increase the wattage to be able to keep the larger amount of yogurt at the right temp? Thanks, Amber > > > I can't part with my oven for 24 hours so I've never used it for making yogurt. But I've heard it's pretty simple if you just replace the oven lightbulb with a 60W incandescant. Guest guest
Have both bulbs on hand and go for some trial and error. But start with 60. Especially now that we are heading into the hotter months.
