Since mine was 'enlarged' (but without signs of infection), I had my mom donate blood (she's type O) just in case for the surgery. I didn't donate b/c it was too close to the surgery by that time and I didn't want to risk being anemic. The Mt Sinai practice 'recommends' that one stores 1-2 units of blood for the surgery but it isn't used often at all. I personally haven't heard of anyone needing it but I know Dr. Gagner said that someone's spleen did get injured once during the surgery and he had to transfuse them. So, I do think needing blood is related to a surgery complication not particularly the DS itself. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001
