Hi ,

Not a silly question at all. Periactin is an oral medicine. It is

tkane before breakfast and supper. Most children take it 1/2 hour to

3/4 of an hour before those meals.

When starting, you start with 1/2 the supper dose for a week. Then go

up to the full supper dose for a week. Then add 1/2 the breakfast

dose for a week. Then the full dose. As you can see, it takes 4

weeks to get up to full dose. That is because periactin is really an

antihistimine and can make the kids very tired and cranky if you give

them too much at once.

This is along with GHT. However, Dr H does not give GH until the

children have experienced caloric catch-up from finally getting enough

calories.

Also, until age 2 (with typical kids, one never quite knows with our

kids) growth is controlled by calories, not GH.

Hi ,

Periactin is a common antihistamine. Its generic name is

cyproheptadine. It comes in either tablet or liquid form and is, as

you speculated, taken orally. Typically it is taken 1/2 to 1 hour

before a meal. It can be given from 1 to 3 times a day.

It is not a very good antihistamine but it is an OK appetite

stimulant. However, it does not work for all kids. There are some who

do not seem to respond to it.

I hope this helps.

:)

Like all antihistamines it can leave one feeling drowsy, cranky or

irritable.
