Guest guest
I read some of your suggestions about painting a doc band with acrylic paint (works great!) and about how you should spray it with a varnish spray or use nail polish to make stickers stick. Thanks so much for your advice! I had a few questions though: Will spraying with varnish make paint permanent? I painted but didnt get around to spraying yet. The paint started to peel and I got worried that he'd swallow a paint chip and so I peeled it all off. I think spraying it will fix the peeling, but will it still make it possible to peel off the paint? Can you spray with varnish right away or do you have to wait a few days like the can recommends? Does spraying with varnish cause dangerous fumes for when you put the helmet back on? Are there stickers that mold better to the shape of the helmet? The paper stickers we bought were awful. Thanks! Guest guest
I painted the varnish on because I didn't want to risk the spray getting on the foam inside. I sanded, painted with acrylic, and varnished and I still have to repair chips. I find them mostly in the morning. He must be bumping it against the crib at night. Also, if he drools at all, and the helmet lays in the wet spot the paint comes off. My son has only had his helmet for a week and a half, and I've repaired the chips twice! Not sure what I'm doing wrong. So, the varnish won't make the paint permanent. When my son's get chipped, it peals right off. Guest guest
Hi Aimee-- I decorated my LO's band last night, so I can tell you what I did--I didn't use varnish. Based on advice that was posted on the board, I painted 3 coats of the acrylic paint, added vinal stickers then put 2 coats of Modge Podge (bought at s) over everything. The mom that posted said that it lasts for several weeks--minus a few chips-- then you can peel it all off again in almost one piece and begin again. My goal is to try to do another layer of Modge Podge from time to time in hopes of preventing chips/peeling. My thought is that it might be like nail polish--if you keep a coat of clear over, the paint job lasts longer. If you go with modge podge, don't freak out when you see all the white--it absorbs right it as it drys. As far as stickers go, that was my biggest challange last night. I think if you use larger stickers, the bubbles are to be expected. In fact I looked really closely at photos in the CT caldnar when I was freaking out about my bubbles, and say that their helmets had some bubbles in their stickers as well. I do think that the Vinal type might hide those bubbles a bit better. Good Luck-- H. Guest guest
I would NOT recommend sanding the bands, it messes with the strength/integrity of the plastic. Please ask your ortho/therapist before doing so. I would also not recommend spraying with varnish either. You should avoid getting anything on the foam and I think it would be hard not to if you're using a spray can. Plus I'd be concerned about the smell of something as strong as an aerosol of any kind. Mod Podge works just fine. It goes on like a layer of glue, dries clear, and you can get it in gloss or matte finish. I would paint, sticker and mod podge all at one time, the whole process took me about an hour and a half, which wasn't too bad. I used an oscillating fan to help dry between coats, and I would leave the band off for shorter periods the day before and after, to make up the extra time out of it on paint days. I would find chips in the morning from him knocking against the crib, or the paint would peel back a little from getting wet. I changed his paint job every 3 weeks. With 4 or so layers of paint and 3 or so layers of mod podge, you can peel it all off really easily and start over whenever you want. Guest guest
I used Modge Podge as well... There's a large round circle sticker (Steelers) that we used - my husband took and exacto knife and " scored " the sticker in two places from the center to the edge to get it to lay flat - you can't tell unless you look really closely. I haven't had any chipping issues - but if I'm not careful when I scrub the inside with alcohol and the alcohol gets on the outside of the band it makes the Modge Podge sticky. I'd do a layer of paint, a layer of Modge Podge, then stickers, then another layer of Modge Podge. I put the stickers on over the paint without sealing with Modge Podge the first time and when I tried to reposition the sticker it pulled up all of the paint and I had to repaint. I was able to do it the first night my son had the band and wasn't sleeping in it yet, and it was totally dry the next morning. Good luck!!! > > > > > > From: aimeedavid2006 <aimeedavid2006@> > > Subject: Questions about painting and decorating doc bands > > Plagiocephaly > > Date: Friday, November 7, 2008, 8:05 PM > > > > > > > > > > I read some of your suggestions about painting a doc band with > acrylic > > paint (works great!) and about how you should spray it with a > varnish > > spray or use nail polish to make stickers stick.
