Guest guest
, I was just about to post a similar question. My 9 month old daughter has been in a DOC band for 6 weeks now. At first we were really pleased with the band's performance and Cranial Technologies. Now we've noticed the same problem as you. There is a space about 1/2 - 1 inch wide on the side of the band where the velcro strap holds the band together. Our daughter's skull has started to grow into this gap. When we take off her band it is totally noticable. We have another concern as well. Since the right/back side of her head was flatter than her left, CT only shaves off part of the band on the right side. This has left almost a right angle inside the back of her band. This digs into her head and has caused a ridge along the back of her skull. We have brougt our concerns to CT the last 2 appointments and have been told that the ridge in the back of her skull was there before. 1) It wasn't; and 2) If it was, aren't we paying for them to fix it? As to the bump on the opening/velcor side they said " the skull is going to grow where it wants to grow " . I THOUGHT THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE BAND WAS TO HELP THE SKULL GROW IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!!! I'm sorry, I'm just totally frustrated. Did any DOC band graduates out there experience this? If so, did the bumps or ridge go away over time? I've resolved to call CT first thing Monday and move up our appointment so that our concerns are seriously addressed before they get any worse. I just wanted to educate myself based on everyone's experiences. Thank you!! Jocelyn ton, Illinois > > i am a mother of a three year old son who had suffered from plagio and had to use a doc band from 7 months to 11 months and the results were great he was a bit older when he started so the result was a little less than say if he started at 4 months, but still i liked the progress he made. i now have twin 7 month old daughters and i noticed at about 2 1/2 months that one of my girls started exhibiting the same signs, at 4 months my daughter recieved the doc band, she grew in it ok, however, i had begun to notice something. i noticed that right where the band ends around the ears it seemed almost like the bone behind the ears was starting to protrude a little more than what i had ever noticed before, i was being told that it was excess fluid that made it seem so but now that she is out of the band the fluid is gone and the bones are still really prominent almost like since there was no space for the bone to grow it was growing more outward than it would have otherwise, she has also been diagnosed with tortocollis and i have had 2 doctors tell me that it does not look normal when i saw her cranial tech about my concerns she said that it looked normal to her so now i am unsure if she just has really prominent bones or if something is really wrong because of the band has anyone had anything similar to this occur can anyone give me advice as to what i should do? i would really be grateful. > emily > a concerned mother >
Guest guest
Hi Jocelyn- As far as the velcro opening goes, my son also had a bump in that area, which was a fluid buildup I believe. In any case, it has gone away since he graduated from his band. Think of it as a too tight sock or pantyhose leaving indentations on the skin after a few hours of wear. After you take them off, there are indentations and ridges in your skin, but they go away after a while. That velcro opening sort of does the same thing after a few weeks/months of wear. As for the other ridge you describe on the back of head, I'm having a hard time picturing exactly what you are referring to. If it is behind her ear, that too is an area that can fill with fluid or a lymphnode can swell but then recedes after graduation. I was told it could take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months for those types of ridges to go away, I assume depending on the length of wear. My son's bands were only shaved out on his right side as well (which is typical for standard plagio treatment - though the side differs obviously per the flat spot). But again, I'm not exactly sure of the ridge you are describing, I don't remember anyone having a similar problem, only the swollen lymphnodes behind the ears. Definitely ask CT about it though, I would hope they would take your concerns seriously. Guest guest
Hi , I'm starting to get worried because has a lump that hasn't gone away yet. It's been about six weeks since she's worn it at night only and almost three months since her full time wear. Her lump isn't really behind her ear. It's more to the right back. When we asked about it, the ortho said it was probably a lymph node and was common with the band. Does a lymph node move or are we dealing with a cyst? I guess I'll ask at her two-year appointment at the end of the month. By the way, also had some fluid build up behind both ears with the ear openings and that does appear to be mostly gone. Guest guest
To answer your question yes lymph nodes do move. You want them to move a hard lump could be something more. Our son has tort which is pretty much resolved but during a PT session we found a lump on his neck about the size of a beebee it was moveable and soft. I freaked out not knowing being a first time mom and called the pedi right away. She saw us the next day and said its very common for babies and children to have enlarged nodes she also said don't be surprised if I found them at the base of his hairline. Sure enough a few weeks later I felt one on each side of his head in the back near the hairline. The bandind does make them slightly larger but then it goes back down but still there. Our pedi said some children have these through toddler years. We are just about done with our band 2 weeks left I can't wait!!!! Good luck... Guest guest
dear jocelyn from evanston illinois firstly thank you for responding to my question i thought i was the only one in this position. I can totally understand your frustration because i am there too! my daughter has had the same exact issues and they have not gone away and whenever i have shown concerns for her it almost seems as thought i am not taken seriously it seems as thought the programed answer that i have recieved is that it is fluid! it is not it is bone! actually when i take her to the pt they notice it too, that where the bone protrudes right above it is an indentation that shows where the band was too tight and how the bones grew out because of it, talk to your doctors and talk some more get lots of opinions and most importantly take pictures, make sure you can have proof of the change. i was told the same thing too that her bones were like that and that the band did not play a factor in it, i can tell you as her mother that is not the case this is a result of the band, it is so frustrating when you are trying to help your child and the end result feels worse than the beginning, while she has had some growth in the flattened areas it seems we now have what seems like other worse malformed head shape and no one to take it seriously. I have had other parents tell me that there children had some fluid and it went down but i also had my pt tell me that she treated a patient that used the band that had a growth where the velco met that at two is still there! remember you are your childs advocate and if you feel something is going on it just might be, thats why i came onto this sight to see if there were others like me so i could see how to persue please respond, i would like to hear more from you, thanks emily las vegas nv > > >> > > > >> > i am a mother of a three year old son who had suffered from plagio and > > >> > had to use a doc band from 7 months to 11 months and the results were > > >> > great he was a bit older when he started so the result was a little less > > >> > than say if he started at 4 months, but still i liked the progress he > > >> > made. i now have twin 7 month old daughters and i noticed at about 2 1/2 > > >> > months that one of my girls started exhibiting the same signs, at 4 > > >> > months my daughter recieved the doc band, she grew in it ok, however, i > > >> > had begun to notice something. i noticed that right where the band ends > > >> > around the ears it seemed almost like the bone behind the ears was > > >> > starting to protrude a little more than what i had ever noticed before, > > >> > i was being told that it was excess fluid that made it seem so but now > > >> > that she is out of the band the fluid is gone and the bones are still > > >> > really prominent almost like since there was no space for the bone to > > >> > grow it was growing more outward than it would have otherwise, she has > > >> > also been diagnosed with tortocollis and i have had 2 doctors tell me > > >> > that it does not look normal when i saw her cranial tech about my > > >> > concerns she said that it looked normal to her so now i am unsure if she > > >> > just has really prominent bones or if something is really wrong because > > >> > of the band has anyone had anything similar to this occur can anyone > > >> > give me advice as to what i should do? i would really be grateful. > > >> > emily > > >> > a concerned mother > > >> > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
I met with Joanne from CT in Skokie, Illinois this afternoon. She explained that while it may seem intuitive that if the head will grow into the space in the back of the DOC Band it will grow into the gap by the velco strap, this is not how the pressure of the band works. My daughter's band was very tight around the bump under her velcro strap. We looked at pictures of Cora (my 9 mo. old) before the band, and, yes, she did have small protrusions above both ears. Joanne explained that if the band has the right amount of pressure, the rest of the head should grow adjacent to and around these bumps and thus minimize their appearance. Not only did she shave the band all the way down around the velcro strap, but she applied heat to part of it to physically bend it outward to minimize the pressure in the area. Joanne said that the question about bumps under the velcro strap is one of the most common questions she gets from parents. She said that Cora did have protrusions before the band and any variance in that is fluid buildup. I asked how long it would take to go away and she said it could take a few weeks. , I know that was not your experience, so I will be monitoring Cora's bump very closely. If I think it has gotten any bigger we will discontinue use. I do feel like my concerns were alleviated by talking with Joanne. Our appointment lasted over an hour and she did not rush us at all. It was great to have someone really listen to my concerns and frustrations and then explain, medically, how each part of the band functions. As for the " valley " issue in the back, she said that she thought the valley follows the sutures of her skull and is not caused by the band. However, she did smooth out the transition in the band for me to alleviate my concerns. Cora has gone through a huge growth spurt in the past week and Joanne thinks she has 4 weeks tops left to go. We're already pleased with the results, but very much looking forward to " Graduation Day " on September 14!! Thank you , , and everyone else for your support!!!
