Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I'm here! I haven't been out to the List Serve in a long time, and was just going thru some old postings and came across this one. Thought I might be able of some help. is now 7 years old and has both RSS and Congenital Scoliosis. He's also deaf and has other issues too. Overall, he's doing wonderful! We're having a great year - hopefully no more surgeries for him - he's had a total of 12 from age 2 to age 6. As far as his scolio goes, he's had 2 spinal fusions to correct the curve. The 1st was at age 4. The doctors were really conservative at this time in fusing only the back of spine in the critical area where the curve was hoping that would straighten him out. Almost 2 years later, we noticed it was curving very rapidly (he was at a 68 degree curve), and we needed to do something again. He had his 2nd spinal fusion last year (Jan 04) at almost 6 years of age. This time they fused the back of the spine but went higher up and down the spine, and they had to go in from the side to fuse the front of the spine as well. Both fusions were very scary - the 1st was a 5 hour operation and the 2nd was an 11 hour operation. I wouldn't wish anyone to have to go through this. did awesome thru it all and now his back looks great! He's running, skipping, hopping like any child - nothing stops him. His back is only at a 20 degree curve now which is the best we'll get. It looks great. The only downfall to all this is that won't have a lot of growth in the trunk area. We had to do the fusions otherwise his spine was ready to put serious pressure onto his internal organs and they we would have had more problems. We felt while was young, we needed to do this before the curve got worse. He was at a good age to recover rapidly. He was in a body cast for a while after both fusions, then a back brace. Now he wears nothing. Although the procedure was very, very scary the results are so worth it now. If you should have any questions, feel free to write. I have a new email address now at cwslane@....
