After that it's another 8 days of traveling and eating restaurant food only. Aren't there any grocery stores you can go to to buy some veggies, fruits, meats, etc? Peace =)Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 75 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 30 mg 1x per day

I have been to China several times and actually my brother married a Chinese gal so have even visited her family there. I would recommend a couple things that may help: When you are in restaurants just ask for stir fry chicken/duck in peanut oil, I would not do the soup as they always add dumplings when cooking, so soup will always have some bit of gluten in it, be it rice or wheat or other. You can ask for simply cooked meat with veggies with nothing on it. Tell them no soy sauce or rice sauce, you can ask. Do you speak or have someone with you who speaks Chinese? Where are you traveling? If you are staying in Western Hotels you would very easily be able to request special foods, in English, from the hotel restaurants. I would also drink green tea if I were you mainly because it can help with hydration and I find green tea in China helped my UC. Oddly enough

every time I have been there I have been fine eating all the Chinese food but I mainly stuck to just meats and veggies. You can get lamb there and even salmon which are easily digestible and may help with your D. And you can get all meat at breakfast time since they do not eat the Western style cereal etc, and if you are staying in hotels they usually have a big breakfast buffett that always has boiled eggs, cooked meats and veggies. It may not be totally SCD in some of the cooked items, but if you eat as much meats/fowl as possible it should help you with the D. And do not drink anything that is not boiled or bottled. I just don't think going the soup route in China is a good idea, you don't know how well they cook things and many times they do not even fully boil soups, but just warm pre-cooked foods in a pot with warm water, which is not really boiled food. I do find their plain green tea with honey very tolerable, just don't drink Puh-er or black as

it is very caffeine filled and they also have a lot of 'weight loss' ingredients that actually make you have more bowel movements, which is the last thing you need. Don't be afraid to request foods wherever you are, and one bit of advice. If you are out traveling always know that you can find bathrooms in all major Western hotels, just walk in and look for them and use them even if you are not staying in that hotel. But actually since the olympics, a lot of new bathrooms have been added to all the main cities in China all over the parks and shopping areas. I know it is hard, but try to enjoy your travels, going to China or travel in general is very doable for anyone with digestive issues. I have had UC for 20 years and been all around the globe and travelled everywhere even when I had bloody diarrhea. I just did it and went for it because I figured I would only get to go to these places once and I wanted to see/enjoy everything, even if it meant

bathroom troubles/messes/illness/hassles. I still hold that premise. Don't be afraid to look for bathrooms and ask for certain foods when eating out. Also, you can go to grocery stores and get food as well. They even have some of the European markets there with all the Western style foods as well. As a last resort get some Imodium for temporary relief, they do have that there, ask even at the hotels for it. You could also have ginger added into your cooked foods, that helps with inflammation which will help the D. Good luck, and enjoy it and have fun. Visiting China is a once in a life time thing, and it is very doable with digestive troubles; last time I was there I was flaring, but I managed, I just forged ahead and ordered foods I knew would work for me, like just eating meat at every meal. Have fun, Cathleen Subject:

I'm able to have chicken soup for today and tomorrow morning at my relative's house. After that it's another 8 days of traveling and eating restaurant food only. I just don't know what to even try eating. They don't tend to make any plain boiled meat here. We keep asking for plain boiled chicken but I'm pretty sure they're adding something to the broth. Maybe I should just remove the meat from the broth and eat that on its own.

I decided to stay with relatives instead of traveling, so yep I will be cooking

my own food. Never expected to get this sick, but hopefully it passes soon.

Thanks,

I decided to stay with relatives so I don't think I'll be eating in restaurants.

I didn't know they would cook dumplings in soup, so frustrating!

I'm with relatives who all speak Chinese well and have tried hard to tell the

restaurant staff too cook plain meat. We were never in Western hotels or

restaurants, so I could never really ask myself since no one ever spoke English.

I did want to continue traveling, but I was just too sick. I was feeling dizzy

and weak from dehydration and using the bathroom every hour. It just wasn't

possible for me to go on a 3 hour bus ride and walk around all day. It's ok,

it's my second time here and now I get the chance to see daily life in China, go

to a local market and grocery store, and meet some more family and friends. Not

missing out on anything, just having a different experience :)

I did try taking Imodium but it actually didn't help at all. I used to rely on

that before SCD, and once while on SCD and traveling. This time it didn't work

and I'm not quite sure why.

Thanks for all the advice, I probably should have asked for advice before

leaving but I was doing so well I wasn't worried about it. This was my first big

trip since being on SCD. Next time I think I'll be better prepared :)
