Guest guest
Do you have a search term? I searched using enteral and ensure and alimentation, and none of them work for the reference you are after. Enteral and alimentation just shows up in the chapter bibliographies. And ensure shows up as a verb, not a nutrition source. Mara >>> I have read the ingredients on Ensure. It was >>> almost all sugar, which will feed the bad bacteria in her gut. > > Which brings the question: why is enteral nutrition so effective in combating Crohn, while at the same time it is feeding you with carbs and sugar? How can that contradiction be explained? Elaine makes a reference to this fact in her book, but provides no explanation. She actually uses the fact that enteral nutrition works, to explain why SCD works. I don't have the book with me..maybe someone can find that reference. It is in one of the first chapters. > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > >
Guest guest
I believe the answer is that Ensure is not the kind of enteral diet that Elaine is talking about. There are prescription enteral feedings that are available for people with serious digestive disorders, and also enteral formulas for infants with metabolic problems. In these formulas everything is broken down to the most simplest components- simple sugars, amino acids, and so on. They would be absorbed easily and would not contribute to the bugs in the gut, so they would be helpful to Chrons. They would be a means of resting the gut as they are so simple to digest. However, they are expensive. I think Nutramigen is such a formula for infants and I believe it is by prescription only. Ensure is useful as a meal substitute and nutrition booster for a number of conditions, but it is not true enteral nutrition. PJ > > >>> I have read the ingredients on Ensure. Guest guest
The mechanism by which enteral nutrition induces clinical remission in Crohn's disease remains unclear: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/407945_4 I don't think it would be possible to replace patented enteral nutrition with home made drinks. Especially that we don't know why it works on Crohn patients. It is not SCD compatible but it does work for the majority of people (60%-80%). > My suspicion is that the reason it may be effective for some people is > because it completely eliminates the polysaccharides, which significantly > reduces the bacteria food. So many people, pre-SCD, are starch-o-holics.
Guest guest
For me, it was a supplement before I knew about SCD. Once I learned about SCD, I cleared the stuff OUT of my house.
