At 8 weeks, you ought to get started on repositioning and that might help--

Where is his flat spot? What city are they sending you to?

The only place near us is in Nashville, 2 1/2 hours away, and they do helmets,

not bands. Some people on this list are near places that do bands. Our helmet

is " passive " --it doesn't press on the problem area, but has space for the

flattened areas to grow out. It is a slower process, so my son has been

helmeted 2 1/2 months and probably has 3-4 months left to go. I think the bands

are a couple months and they're done?

E. does wear his 23 hours--basically I take it off morning and night to clean it

and clean his head, then it dries and goes back on. He is not bothered by it in

the least; it just gets really hot.

Since we're in a passive band, and it works slower, we only go back every 4 or 5

weeks to see the doctor--so although it's quite a long trip for us, really,

we'll only have to go 8 times or so before it's done.

We went the first day and were evaluated by the doctor, and he agreed that we

should seriously consider the helmet, even though at that time, we didn't know

whether insurance would pay. We decided to do it and pay out of pocket, and

just hope we'd get paid back. The helmet place couldn't fit us in that day, so

we had to come back 2 days later to get him casted. It took 10 days for them to

build the helmet, and we went back then to get it on (May 21st). We had to go

back to the helmet place 2 weeks later for a follow up, and to the doctor 2

weeks after that for a 4-week checkup at the end of June. He has been out of

town, so our appointment this week is actually 6 weeks since the last one, and

we just go every 4 or 5 weeks from here on out----

Hope that breaks it down for you a little bit--but you may have a different

experience altogether :) but breathe!! It's a stressful time at the beginning,

but it's not bad at all.

And my insurance came through 2 weeks ago--2 months after we got the helmet--and

is reimbursing. That was a huge surprise.

Best wishes!!

Betsy

my son will be 8 weeks on monday and when we went to the doctor last week they

suggested we get his head checked out that he may need a helmet. what i was

wondering is how does this process work will we get the helmet at our first

appt.? is each case different or do they all have to wear them 23 hours a day?

and how often do you have to go for a check up(our doctor is 4 hours away)? and

any other helpful advice would be much appreciated.

thanks
