my son will be 8 weeks on monday and when we went to the doctor last week they

suggested we get his head checked out that he may need a helmet. what i was

wondering is how does this process work will we get the helmet at our first

appt.? is each case different or do they all have to wear them 23 hours a day?

and how often do you have to go for a check up(our doctor is 4 hours away)? and

any other helpful advice would be much appreciated.

thanks

Hi ,

welcome to the group. 8 wks is very young. you can try looking at the files

section and see if the repositioning tips can help you improve his head shape.

Does he have torticollis? This is where one side of the neck is tighter and the

head doesn't have full range of motion, causing the baby to prefer on side and

thus develop plagio. If he has tort physical therapy will be needed, and they'll

show you stretches to do at home.

Right now you can help a lot if you can keep him off his head. Use a baby

carrier vs a swing, carseat (unless in the car), stroller etc. Give him lot of

tummy time, etc. If he his on his head try getting him off the flat spot. Put a

towel or something under one shoulder to encourage the head to flop to the other

side.

Also some odd head shapes can start in utero, and a band may be needed to

correct that. Particularly if a baby didn't have much room to move around in

there (e.g. with twins).
