Guest guest
Hi all, I have been very busy lately and knew that this post would take a while so I have been putting it off. Anyway, insisted on getting up early this morning, so here I am at the computer. We are still dealing with the kindergarten placement issue for September. Our local school district decided to hold our meeting at the very end to give as much time as possible to mature, so we are still waiting on that. His preschool teacher is still recommending an integrated type class for him which our town does not have. The town next to us has an excellent reputation and does have an integrated class so this might be the best choice, we just don't know yet. The biggest problem with that is Becca. She has severe anxiety issues (both kids are in the middle of psych evaluations) and I don't know if she could handle going to school without her brother (they are currently in the same school but different classes). When last we saw Dr H (in February) she was very happy with his growth and weight gain. She did not change a single one of his medications (but I need to call her, I think we need to up his zantac). However, as regards his behavior, she noted that he was displaying many PDD tendencies. She also told us that she is seeing more and more RSS children with PDD tentancies and wanted us to take him for a psych evaluation. saw the psych this past Wednesday. After watching in action (he couldn't stop opening and closing the doors or playing with the phones), and reading the huge questionaire we had completed he decided that is definitely PDD. He had been trying to reach Dr H and she actually called back while Steve was there with . The two of them talked and decided on the appropriate medication (risperdal). The good news (if anything of this is good) is that the risperdal is actually a better appetite stimulant than the periactin. I am really concerned about what this means for 's future. I am waiting for a written evaluation for school purposes, but am worried that this means they will never want to transfer to a mainstream class. As for Becca, I am also waiting for her written evaluation. She has been seeing the school psychologist 2x/week since October and is making very little progress. She is an emotional wreck. She goes from happy to hysterical in nothing flat. She had 3 consective horrible days in school where they had to remove her from the classroom. She was actually shaking she was so upset. She is now screaming which she never did before. She is afraid of the silliest things and runs out of the room if is playing a certain game on his leapster (she doesn't like the music it plays). As of now, her preschool teacher is recommending a regular classroom (she is reading at least at a second grade level, but still requires plenty of OT) with a one-on-one aide to deal with her outbursts. I hope the psychiatrist comes up with something, as we are at our wits end in how to solve her problems. Anyway, that is our novel for now.
