Guest guest
Beth - Yes, these are all great ideas! Dr. Dumont is an pediatric GI at Loyola Children's Hospital, and he is also the Director of their Integrative Medicine Dept. He came to the MAGIC convention 2 and 3 years ago, and spoke. He was asked to discuss possible natural remedies for the various RSS/SGA GI problems. I remember ginger and peppermint being discussed. He did admit, unfortunately, that he had yet to find any natural remedy that would help RSS/SGA kids with the following though: appetite increase, severe reflux or delayed gastric emptying. I talked to him afterwards about the constipation thing. Unfortunately for us, he felt that 's constipation was too severe due to her severe delayed emptying to be helped by natural remedies (although clearly he still recommended the high fiber, etc). I was bummed on that one. He talked about when an RSS/SGA child is at risk, when their weight is truly not just thin but in trouble, that those are the times where " integrative medicine " truly comes into play -- where the combination of pharmaceutical meds and natural meds can be at the biggest benefit. I really liked listening to him, as he seemed to encompass the entire RSS/SGA child. My daughter now loves peppermint tea, and ginger is a must whenever she has any kind of tummy ache. I probably should be better about giving these to her on a regular basis. > > For those children experiencing bloating, gas and other digestive > disturbances consider the many benefits of spices such as ginger, > fennel, cinnamon, nutmeg, chamomile and peppermint. > > They can all be made into a tea. Guest guest
Beth, Thank you for mentioning possible natural remedies - I use several natural remedies for various things. However, as someone who suffers from severe reflux and delayed gastric emptying, I have to mention that peppermint can actually make these conditions worse. Cinnamon could also have negative effects, if taken in a large enough dose, as can as any other naturally " spicy " food item. I had read this previously, but learned it was true through my personal experiences. in Alaska RSS-Support wrote: Message: 9 Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 18:34:45 -0000 Subject: Digestive Disturbances- Natural Remedies For those children experiencing bloating, gas and other digestive disturbances consider the many benefits of spices such as ginger, fennel, cinnamon, nutmeg, chamomile and peppermint. They can all be made into a tea. I use a combination of raw grated ginger and fennel for my daughter (1 teaspoon of each in about 3 cups of water). Our doctor started 9 months ago on this tea combination and it works really well. I will post separately a more detailed overview of a clinical analysis for each of these remedies. 1. Ginger soothes nausea, motion sickness and other stomach upset; relieves morning sickness, eliminates intestinal gas, and relaxes and soothes the intestinal tract and encourages bile flow. 2. Fennel can be useful for indigestion and spasms of the digestive tract. 3. Cinnamon supports digestive function. 4. Nutmeg for nausea and vomiting, indigestion and diarrhea. 5. Peppermint is soothing to the digestive tract and relieves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
