Guest guest
Hi all. Autumn is now on her 5 th ear infection in 4 1/2 mos (along with strep and upper resp infection) My question is when do I start getting concerned with these infections? She never had one until I stopped bf when I got pregnant (she was about 10 mos), and they have been nonstop ever since and lots of fluid build up, usually in her right ear. They make her eat less and miserable, then she gets meds, gets better, then gets another one. She also is always sick with something, usually upper resp then turns bacterial and that may be why she gets them. My 2 boys never had them and I read a lot about RSS kids being prone, do you think this could be an RSS thing or just chance? Also, are your kids always sick? My boys will get something viral then Autumn gets it worse and it just lasts and lasts, some turn bacterial, gets better for a week then she gets another. Thanks mom to Autumn 14 1/2 mos, Ocean 2 1/2, Skye 6 1/2, baby girl due in July
Guest guest
HI! Emerence had so many ear infections and fluid buildup that she had her first set of tubes at 9 months. One extruded and then she had a 2nd set placed at 17 months. One has extruded again (apparently unusual but figures with Emerence!) and we are considering a 3rd set. Fluid buildup can cause hearing and speech issues and possible hearing loss if prolonged and extreme. The surgery takes about 10 minutes, the whole procedure not much more. I took EMernece in, stayed with her while they put her under, someone walked me back, I changed out of scrubs, walked 1 minute into the waiting room and was there only 5 minutes before they brought me in to her as she was in recovery and waking up. She was eating and drinking 15 minutes later and we left 45 minutes after she woke up in recovery. She was back to her normal self and running around as soon as we got home. You should see an ENT for an eval - and they will probably do a hearing test too. , Mom to , 5 and Emerence, 2 RSS/SGA, 20lb 11 oz 31 " > > Hi all. Guest guest
Hi I think RSS kids get ear infections because of the low set ears, this makes their Eustacian(?sp) tube(that is the tube between the ear and throat) flat rather than on a slant if the ears are higher set. This leads to fluid sitting in the tube rather than draining out as it should. Then this fluid gets thick(glue ear) and any nice little bug (bacteria/virus) that is passing, settles in.The fluid i am talking about is any mucous from a cold, reflux, or just normal body secretions. Liam has chronic ear infections, he has been known to rupture his eardrum 3 times in a month. Liam had his first lot of ear tubes at 11 months, he is now about to get his 3rd lot. The ear tubes allow any fluid that builds up to drain away, to the outside, unfortunately they dont last along time. If Autumn hasnt already seen a ENT(ears, nose throat specialist) then go see one, when you have chronic ear infections it can interfere with hearing and speech development. The difference in Liams speech when he has tubes is amazing, we can pick up very quickly now when his tubes are getting blocked up, just from the way he talks. I think you will find ear tubes will stop her getting sick as much, when that warm moist enviroment is taken away. Hope that this all made sense, and sorry if you already new all this Jody(mum to Liam 3yrs9mnths 11kg 86cm and Cameron0 > > Hi all.
