Guest guest
Pat, Great news about Bradon. Can you buy that pizza and keep it in the freezer? I would keep on giving it to him if that is what hw will eat. Wow. Who would think that pizza would make him so happy? You do NOT have to follow the stages in the baby food system. In fact, we never really made it to stage 3 with either child in this house. By the time they were ready for stage 3, they were so interested in table food that we just did not bother. As long as is eating the food and tolerating it, go for it. I admit that when you are going places, it is easier to tuck in a jar of baby food, but if he wants regular food, then you should give him what he wants. Let him guide you. We, and Max's GI, have always believe that kids know what their bodies need. Listen to and let him guide you along the way. Jodi Z
Guest guest
WAY TO GO BRANDON, Hey grandma Pat, well this is surely a sign that all you're families patience and support/care of B is paying off. From meeting us rss adults you'll know that sometime or other rss kids do grow up and eat and maybe this is the start of s progress. Even if he has any setbacks at least you all know that he has eaten and enjoyed it. Give him a big hugs and high 5 from me. HOORAH!!!!!!!! pcpets wrote:Hi Everyone!! As most of you know, is mostly g-tube fed. A couple of months ago, we started lowering his daytime g-tube feeds, to accommodate the extra 70-100 oral calories we were getting in a day. We've been having a heck of a time trying to get to switch from Stage 2 baby foods to Stage 3. He just can't seem to get over the extra texture, and they create a LOT of gagging. Well, tonight we had the Geno's individual pizzas for dinner, and B went nuts, claiming that he wanted some pizza! So, of course, we gave him a slice (equal to about 1/6 of the pizza). The boy ate it ALL!!! And wanted something more!! So we gave him a small handful of Cheerios, which he promptly finished, and again requested more! We are SO thrilled!!!! One question though. Has anyone here, with a child with an oral aversion, ever just skipped the " Stages " of baby food, and gone straight to table food??? no longer has a feeding therapist, but when he did, she seemed to think that we needed to take this is slow easy steps, and that we needed to get him to eat stage 3 foods before we moved on to table food. Any ideas?? Thanks for letting me brag!! LOL Pat (g-ma to , RSS, 3 yrs old, 23.5#, 32.8 " , G-Tube)
Guest guest
Pat, This is wonderful news! If he'll eat the pizza and can handle it - don't stop him. There are more calories in a mouthful of pizza than an entire jar of stage 3 baby foods. And have you ever tasted the stage 3 baby foods?? They make me gag. Jillie will not eat any baby food and only sporadically eats table foods. However, if I liquidize (make it the same texture as baby food) lasagne, spinach pie etc - she eats it fine. Sometimes I think it's a taste thing vs a texture thing. Let the little guy eat what he wants. He'll spit it out if he can't handle it! > Hi Everyone!! > > As most of you know, is mostly g-tube fed. Guest guest
Pat- That is SOOO cool! Congratulations to ! Hey, did you videotape the event? My parents videotaped the first thing I ever willingly and independently put into my mouth....a red lollipop, when I was about 5 or 6 months old. I didn't do too badly, aimwise, but seemed to want to put the " stick " side in much more often than the " pop " side <G>. Videotape him one of these days, if you can...you'll all appreciate it later. -Sharon- Just an RSS kid who grew up
Guest guest
Hi Everyone!! Thanks for all your encouragement, and support. My youngest child, Kaity, NEVER ate baby food. If you had to spoon it into her mouth, it was taboo! Little Miss Independent!! LOL BUT she didn't have what you would call an " oral aversion " and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't doing anything that might turn off of food in any way! We've made some giant strides in eating since the convention this year. (Funny how all our " bench marks " seem to run from convention to convention! LOL) is currently sitting down for 3 " meals " at our house daily. He usually gets either yogurt or applesauce (with baby cereal mixed in), and some dry Cheerios for breakfast. We do " feeding therapy " at lunch time, having him take at least 5 bites of Stage 3 baby food (which he seems to hate, and mostly gags down), followed by a jar of Stage 2 baby food (always a meat and veggie). And he sits with us at dinner where he gets another jar of Stage 2 baby food (with egg yolk mixed in to up the protein) and a little bit of whatever we are having for dinner (meat, veggie, starch). But he rarely even touches those things! My biggest concern, right now, is that we encourage the " right " foods for him. His blood tests have showed definite insulin resistance, and I don't want to do anything to aggravate that situation. We currently have his tube feeds to back us up (he is still on continuous feeds), so we don't " really " have to worry about how many calories we're getting down him, but we DO need to worry about the " types " of foods we encourage him to eat. I would like to see him get a " taste " for a healthy diet from the beginning. Anyway, thank you all for the encouragement and support!! I was just SO thrilled that B was actually " demanding " a table food, that I had to share! Hugs for you all! Guest guest
I had two non-RSS kids who would have nothing to do with baby food. They went straight for table food at six-seven months! I say, " If the child wants real food and isn't choking on it.....go for it! " Just my opinion. Conny, great-aunt to \ > Hi Everyone!! > > As most of you know, is mostly g-tube fed. Guest guest
Hey Conny!! I totally agree with you! I just haven't had to work with a child with oral aversions before, so I guess I'm questioning my own experiences. My youngest child, Kaity, NEVER at baby food! She was solely breastfed for 9 months, because she wouldn't accept a bottle! We started her on a sippy cup at 6 months, and gave her table foods as she could handle them. With Kaity, if YOU had to shovel it in, then she wasn't going to have anything to do with it! LOL Thanks for the opinion. How are things going with ?? Guest guest
Pat: saw a feeding therapist prior to getting his g-tube out and he hated the baby foods!!!!! So we went straight to table food, which for his age at the time, was better. The taste was much better for him. We started off slow, but with table foods. Lots of mashed stuff and he also LOVES to this day melted cheese. You want B to " want " to eat what he likes and if it's table food then give him table food. If he's forced to eat baby food he doesn't care for, then it's just a turnoff for him and another battle. Good luck! Stacie > > Hi Everyone!! > > > > As most of you know, is mostly g-tube fed.
