Pam,

I am assuming you would come into the Pennsylvania Train Station at

Madison Square Garden. That is where I always come into from Central Pa when

I travel by Amtrak to NYC. The train station is on 33rd St, and quite a

distance from the hospital. The hospital is from 98th to 101st St between

Madison Ave and 5th Ave. There are really no hotels close the hospital

except the Guest House, which is the one they probably told you about. I

also dont think you are going to find another hotel in the city for any less

money. I paid $175.00 a night for a room there for 2 beds. The rooms had a

microwave, sink and small fridge in the kitchen area. There was also a

recliner, but I did not fit into it very well, so I mainly sat on my bed or

in one of the other chairs. The people there are very nice, and the rate

included all the taxes, which is something that would be added onto any other

hotel room rate. The tax rate in NYC is 13.25% total. The Guest House also

was able to provide me with a shower seat so I did not have to stand when

taking a shower. My husband was able to walk to the drug store to get me what

I needed and to other places to get us food. And I dont think I could have

survived a cab ride the day I was discharged. We finally arranged for the

hospital to let us borrow a wheelchair and he pushed me to the Guest House.

All the close exits of the hospital are now closed since the attack on Sept

11. I could have managed the walk from the 5th Ave exit, but not from where

we had to exit on Madison Ave. I ended up staying there 5 nites and just had

to bite the bullet and put it on my credit card. I was not able to travel

home before that. If you would find another place for your mother to stay,

she would have taxi fares each day on top of what you would paying for a

room.

If there is anything else I can help you with let me know.

Hi Sheri,

Do you know how close we're able to get to the hospital now? Were the exits

just temporarily closed?

thank you, sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

There are 2 entrances/exits open on Madison Ave. The one you will be

instructed to go through for surgery and the other is about 1/2 block away on

Madison also. Everyone has to show photo ID and visitors are questioned as

to who they are seeing. My husband was denied access one day because I did

not exisit <G>.

The 98th Street entrance for the consultations is still open also. This was

how it was when I was there for surgery, and was still that way when I was

there for my follow-up this past Thursday.
