Guest guest
Hello-- I have been lurking around for about a month, so thought that I would officially introduce myself and share the beginning of my story, as you will probably go through the rest with us . My son Merrick is 16-weeks old and 5-weeks ago our peditrician referred us to CT as she was worried about the flat spot on his head and his favor turning to the left. She gave us stretches. When we went to CT we heard the words plagio and tort for the first time, and they put Merrick into the severe category with his plagio and mild for tort. They recommended repositioning for a month. I had a lot of guilt towards myself in the case that we did anything to cause the plagio. I had to get past that! My husband and I were very agressive with repositioning. I have read through much of the past posts on this group and was looking for success stories on repositioning and din't find much, so I set out to attempt to be that success story. Today we went back to CT for our check-in. I would say that we were very successful with repositioning, going down from the severe category of plagio to moderate...a big difference in the photos--I will try to post them soon. So if anyone is out there wondering about repositioning, especially if your child is young, there is some improvement that can be made! You don't have to just sit around waiting for appointments, you can mimmick the helmet with repositioning. Just let me know if you want some help with strategies. I also made some major improvement with tummy time-- Merrick hated it in the beginning and now he has fun with it and we made major improvements with his tort. Anyways, because of this great window of time we have with Merrick for head growth, CT is recommending that we band. Because I have read all of the posts here, that no longer freaks me out! We are so blessed that our insurance (Aetna) should cover this (they will confirm with me soon) and that our peditrician caught this early. With that said, you will probably get more posts from me when we actually get the helmet, but for now I am at peace. I made sure to get a copy of his measurements. I recall someone writing a post that explained what the numbers mean, and I will try to look for that, but if anyone has input, feel free. Cranial Vault Asymmetry--11mm Mid-Face Asymmetry--5mm Skull-Base Asymmetry--8mm One more thing that I learned from my plagio buddy, , that helped me with CT today. AETNA requires two months of repositioning prior to banding, but tummy time counts! So if you were doing tummy time from when they were a baby, let CT or whomever know that. It really is powerful to read through the posts, because I felt that I was able to ask educated questions this time at CT instead of sitting there wanting to cry my head off. Thanks, Mother to Merrick, 16 weeks

Guest guest
Sorry to jump in here, but I would not recommend using the noggin nest at night for sleeping. I believe it warns not to on the packaging, but I was also told verbally not to leave the baby unattended while using it, so I only used it on the floor and in his carseat. Hopefully someone can chime in with other suggestions for night time repo. Good luck! Guest guest
Do you know if it isnt recommended due to suffocation risk or because its bad for their heads to lay on something like that at night? Guest guest
Suffocation risks (sorry for not clarifying). I think because it's not attached to anything (tied to the crib rails, velcroed, etc.), and once they start rolling over in their sleep, it could become a problem. I hadn't heard of the head growing out of the hole thing, we did not have that issue. I still think using it on the floor and definitely in the carseat will be helpful, better than not using anything, it seemed to make a difference for my son (unfortunately, not enough though). Guest guest
Hi --and anyone interested in learning some repo. Here are some 'tricks' Merrick was 3-months when we began repo, so we still had some room to go on head holding and tummy time. Rolled up towels and blankets became our friends. We have them lying all over our house. We use them to put under his chest during tummy time--because he needed some support with that of first, and it helped us to prolong tummy time. But for repo, we slip under his shoulder and side, parallel to his body, on the flat-head side to keep him off of it. We also use those in the car seat, stroller, etc. You can also use it when he is sitting in his boppy if he still uses it for head support. I found that the carter blankets folded in half then rolled up work really well--depending on your child's age, the towles might work better. As far as sleeping, we bought two sleep repositioners and trid both-- with the approval of our pediatrician--I would check in with them first. They have them at Target. They have two sort-of-triangle like sides and are velcroed together so that you can space accordingly. CT recomended velcroing less than shoulder length apart and then tipping his side up (the side on flat-head side) but not all the way on his side because of SIDS danger. Again, up to your comfort and your dr, but we began napping Merrick on his side propped by a pillow or on his belly--only when supervised (ie. having his sleep in the living room where we could see him, or letting him nap on our chests on his belly). The key to repo is to ingrain it in your mind which way you always want him looking--it's the opp. of the flight side if your child has plagio. So, in our instance his flat spot is on the right--so we always position him to look left--that is when he is on his back or on his tummy. Our little guy also has a slight tort, so that is also why we always look left. I will end by saying that I was a bit obsessive about repo, but the good thing is that it caused some improvement. He was fussy at first for a couple days, but then he adjusted. If your child has tort--make sure you are doing stretches for that, or your not going to get far. I stopped using my carseat/stroller travel system except in the car-- I avoided prolonged carseat rides and stroller rides. I no longer used his little chair where he would lay back, and instead bought the Bumbo chair--love it. I didn't ever introduce the swing because of their little heads resting on the back. Okay, best of luck , email or post any time you have ?'s. Also if you need me to get you a link to a sample sleep repositioner, just let me know. Keep us posted!! > > hi shannon - my son was just referred to ct a few days ago and since then i have been reading all i can about aggresive repo techniques. i went out yesterday and bought a tummy time mat and a boppy noggin nest to sleep on at night. i would love to hear your repo techniques to see if i can try to correct his flatness a bit before our ct appointment. thx, rachel > > > > We made the decision to band > > > Hello-- > > I have been lurking around for about a month, so thought that I would > officially introduce myself and share the beginning of my story, as > you will probably go through the rest with us . > > My son Merrick is 16-weeks old and 5-weeks ago our peditrician > referred us to CT as she was worried about the flat spot on his head > and his favor turning to the left. Guest guest
Hello-- I posted Merrick's photos from CT of the before and after from 4- weeks of repo in case anyone wants to look at his 'mug shots.' They are in the back of the 'M' album and there are three different views. You can see that he also has cradle cap--which has been a whole other battle--but we are hopefully making improvements there. In the before photos he was only 3-months and couldn't hold up his head on his own, as he could in the most recent photos. He has facial asymatry in his cheeks, eyes and ears. I am very open to any input people have about the photos, so post away! H. Guest guest
Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the info about repo. I am going to start implementing these. Could you send me a link to the sleep positioner? I bought one a few days ago but its not the one you are suggesting and he also hates it! So I am going to return it. When I was at babies r us the other day I saw a sleep positioner especially made for preventing plagio. It was kind of pricey but it looked like a good concept. Here is the link to it. http://www.basiccomfort.com/ Anyone here ever heard of or use this? Thanks. - Knappsdale, AZMother of a 5 month old baby with a weird shaped head We made the decision to band > > > Hello-- > > I have been lurking around for about a month, so thought that I would > officially introduce myself and share the beginning of my story, as > you will probably go through the rest with us . > > My son Merrick is 16-weeks old and 5-weeks ago our peditrician > referred us to CT as she was worried about the flat spot on his head > and his favor turning to the left. Guest guest
Hi -- The one we got was only $13 and we bought it at Target. I have pasted the link to it here--hope that works. Otherwise you can go to Target.com and search for it. We bought two from there and this one worked much better--it's very sturdy. This one works super well for us. The triangle sides go just under his armpits and we move the secure the velcro so that the traingele sides are a bit less than should length apart. We then scoot his right hip up just a bit to keep his head looking to the left (his flat spot is on the right).
