Guest guest
I think that some of the info you are mentioning is on Dr. Rabkins site: http://www.pacificsurgery.com/Obesity_Surgery/Our_Results/our_results.html These are my recollections based upon a lot of reading that I have done over the past months. As to the complication and mortality rates, they are (except for leaks) the same as for any major surgery involving general anesthesia. The real risk of mortality is closer to 1/2%. Remember, too, that statistics are accumulated over time and that in the earlier phases, the risks were higher. The mortality risk is very much patient dependent with the real big risk falling upon those weighing in excess of 600 lbs., patients on oxygen, patients with serious other medical problems and patients who are not ambulatory. The risk that is greater for intestinal surgery is, obviously, leaks. Clearly, if the intestine or stomach are not the subject of cutting, the risk is just not there. Your risks for the DS, except for the above, is the same as it would be for the removal of your gallbladder. The risks are lower for the less invasive gastric band and adjustable gastric band. Unfortunately, studies haven't shown them to be effective except for people who have relatively little to lose. If you are morbidly obese, don't consider either of them. EWL & risk factors > I remember running across a site that showed the average weight loss > for ds vs rny and the % lost as well as the amount regained. Does > anyone know were that site is? I would also like some info on > mortality rate for wls compared to other surgeries or wls and > co-mobortories. My mom is worried about the 1-2% mortality rate... Guest guest
Ann, Try looking at http://thinforlife.med.nyu.edu/weightloss/maintain.html. There is a chart here that shows what you're talking about.
