Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, I was just wondering what you thought about my food choices etc below in my previous post from the other day and should i try the more advanced foods, I have the following recipe books at home, "Roman Parasads's Recipes For The SCD", "Lucys SCD Cookbook" and Elaines BTVC book so yesterday my sister made me a shepards pie which was lovely and she also made me sun dried tomatoe bread and banana muffins, I spoke with lucy on the phone as i order stuff from her and she advised to me to try a variety of foods. I just wanted to ask your opinion on this as i suppose my aim is to slow the diorreha and put as much weight on me before surgery. I have also ordered some s.boullardi as i hear its good for reducing diorreha, What do u think about the fresubin drinks should i take them even though there not scd legal, will i be getting enough vit c from my freeda multi vits or do you reccommend i get more? I know the likes of almound flour which are in my muffins and bread my sister made, the cauliflower and onions (which would have been in the shepards pie she made) are all advanced foods even avacodos which ive had are advanced but i feel that eating intro and stage 1 foods only, is not helping me gain weight. In your last post to me you said "You might ask your doctor what your food regimen will be after the surgery. It may well start with clear liquids, progress to thick liquids, then to soft foods, and finally to whatever your new normal foods will be.If that's the case, I can help you formulate SCD-legal menus for this time, and you can have your foods made up in advance. I also recommend having someone prepare food for you for at least six weeks after your hospital stay, because you are not going to feel like cooking while you recover" This would be of great help to me thank you. I will try find out more And like i said as far as i know il be on a feed after surgerey im guessing this is some sort of nutritional feed but il check this out with the stoma nurse and get back to you. Hopefully recovery wont be too bad, at home we have a downstairs bedroom with bathroom (toilet and electric shower) so i wont have to climb any stairs and il look into getting a pole like you said and even the pillow that was mentioned as i suppose il have to sit upright all the timeThanks Mark Previous Post Hi Marilyn, Thanks for your help i greatly appreciate it, I'm really not sure what's best to do to get myself in the best shape possible for this surgery they are taking the whole colon and rectum out as they are where my disease is active luckily enough my small bowel is fine. But il be on a stoma bag for life as there is no cahance of reattachment. I get so mixed up with this diet and only add more stress to myself making me worse plus i was told on LDN groups that i should stop takin LDN before surgerey coz pain meds wont work! (news to me). Since im only stage 1 still and still have the diorreha im always confused on what and waht not i should eat. Your right about vitiman c and i would juice some oranges but afraid it will make my D worse, so i only juice grapes and apples. I have Freeda Multi Vits (3 a day) and Freeda calcium (5 per day) too so should i take the full amount of them each day or is there some scd legal vit c i can get? As i need to get my weight up for this surgerey to avoid complications (im only 6 & half stone) do you reccommend i eat all scd foods even if there stage 2,3,4 etc. Im soo worried bout my low weight im even considering taking the fresubin drinks again which my dietition had me on, there high calorie drinks but with illegals, But then again maybe my yoghurt (which i make with cream and milk) smoothies with bannana, honey, vanilla, butter and raw egg will be good enough for getting the calories up, I also have cream cheese ( made from straining my yogurt) on my sandwich bread topped with chedder cheese each day, i bought avacados too and eat meat each day with purred carrots for dinner, maybe i should add more cooked vegetables to my dinners? As for breakfast il eat scrambled eggs with chedder cheese and butter as a mix, or else tinned tuna or mackeral in sunflour oil. Is there anything else you suggest i do or dont do... By the way my stoma nurse said i will be on a feed after surgery and could be in hospital for 2 weeks depending on recovery, she also said that when i go back to eating i need to drink loads of water i think 4 litres per day and that i can never eat nuts or mushrooms?? which had me thinking how would i do SCD... Thank you so much for the help, id be lost without the help Mark Prednisilone ( started 40 mg 19th April 2010, now on 25 mg tabs decreasing by 5mg each week) LDN (Started 3mg tabs may 1st 2010, due to increase to 4.5 mg tabs after 1 month) Freeda Multi vit tabs Freeda Calcium tabs Diognosed with chrons/UC 1998 Started SCD bout a month ago From: Wizop Marilyn L. I've been there, two years ago, for cancer surgery -- had a complete hysterectomy, removal of ovaries and Fallopian tubes, as well as removal of lymph nodes for tests to see if the cancer had spread. I was scared witless because one of the first places cancer spreads from the uterus is to the colon, and they'd told me that if it had spread, they'd be taking my colon, too. Please stay with SCD up to your surgery. The nutrition will help. I also recommend a good multivitamin, as well as as much Vitamin C as you can tolerate. It makes a major difference in how you heal. You CAN stay on SCD while you are in the hospital. If you are not equal to the amount of cooking necessary for this, find someone who is willing to cook food, put it up for you, and bring it to the hospital for you. You might ask your doctor what your food regimen will be after the surgery. It may well start with clear liquids, progress to thick liquids, then to soft foods, and finally to whatever your new normal foods will be.If that's the case, I can help you formulate SCD-legal menus for this time, and you can have your foods made up in advance. I also recommend having someone prepare food for you for at least six weeks after your hospital stay, because you are not going to feel like cooking while you recover.I also strongly recommend that you prepare your home -- make sure you do not have to climb stairs to reach your home, your bedroom, or your bathroom. Make sure you have rails to hold onto getting on and off the toilet, in and out of bed, and in and out of the shower. My surgery was on a Monday; I did very well, and they released me on Friday. It hadn't occured to me that I would need help getting out of bed, so I'd only set up a superpole in the bathroom. We got home, and I discovered I needed a pole and trapeze for the bed, and had to order them second day air. Darned shipping cost almost as much as the pole! But when we had that in place, I was able to get myself in and out of bed, especially at night. Before the pole came in, my poor husband lost a lot of sleep -- his normal sleep cycle is about three hours. My bladder was on a two hour cycle. "Harry. I have to go pee." "Mmm." "Harry. I have to go pee." "Mmm." "Harry, if I don't go pee NOW, you're going to be getting up and changing the bed. I have to go NOW!"Once the pole came in, I was able to get in and out of bed on my own, which made for a big improvement in my outlook. <wry grin> Ask Jodi: she also made the mistake of not having a set-up for getting in and out of bed, and on and off a couch or chair after her gut surgery.I do wish to heaven that it was possible for you to give SCD a chance, but if you can't, you can't. Please know that my thoughts are with you. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
