Yes,

that particular outbreak of itchy welts across my abdomen doesn’t come

nearly as often as in the first 3 years on SCD.  Now it just occurs once in a

while, in the early evening not long after supper.  It doesn’t always

occur when I’ve tried a “new” food that day (which I eat at

noon, never at supper).  So I have assumed it means my body isn’t able to

produce enough bile to deal with the foods still remaining in the stomach, so

the liver puts out histamines.  Or something like that; I need to ask my gastroenterologist

to explain the process again [grin].  I think I read something about this kind

of reaction being caused by a lack of bile salts?

This

kind of itchy welts feels different than my usual outbreak of hives.  For one

thing it is localized; my hives can spread from scalp to feet.  Another thing

is that when I get hives I also get respiratory distress.  Which confirms for

me that this isn’t strictly an immune response.  And it helps that my

gastroenterologist told me this kind of reaction was due to my upper GI

malfunctioning, so I know the cause.

I

have noticed over the past few years that my upper GI works the best from 11:30

am to 4:30 pm; has trouble with foods before and after that time frame.  So I

eat the more challenging foods between those times. But apparently some days my

upper GI has had enough by the time I eat supper at 6-ish.

Not

having a gallbladder has really aggravated my already dysfunctional upper GI.  That

is the one thing I wish I could go back and do again – say no to the

cholecystectomy.  It was an unnecessary procedure and just made things worse

for me.  I was so naïve about medical matters then [sigh].

Still,

the longer I’ve been on SCD and the more stable my upper GI has become,

the less often this itchy welt outbreak occurs.  So that’s good news.
