Guest guest
Rach Wait till March! I know it's along time from now, but I had the vertical banded gastoplasty (the old VBG) and regained all but 29 lbs of the fat I lost. Had to get a revision and chose the BPD/DS and couldn't be happier. With the VBG and, I am sure, the lap band, it's just restricive surgery and you will HAVE to diet. And you will to chew up your food and eat mostly liquids. You'll probably lose some weight just because you can't eat much. With the VBG I never felt satisfied and I never felt " full " just awfully uncorfortable. With my BPD/DS I can eat what I want, although I usually don't want to eat much. When I do eat, I get satisfied with much less food than I did before. Yes, I like sweets, but find that my body really likes me to eat protein or I get very tired and sleepy w/o it. Did a stupid thing one day, ate donuts for breakfast, candy for lunch, ice cream for a snack and I felt sooo tired and kinda out-of-it till I finally ate some salami and cheese. Then I felt better. I'll not eat that poorly again. So, anyway, I had two open gastro procedures, and I don't wish that one anyone. The first was in 1993 and I was alot younger and bounced back quickly. The second was in 2000 (that's the BPD/DS) and it took a while to return to normal. Yes, the second procedure took 8 1/2 hours to revise me from VBG to BPD/DS and yes, my gall bladder and apendix was also removed so it was more surgery. . .you know, more stuff was taken out and more stuff was done to my body. I don't know much about the band. Is it done with minimal invasion? Is it a lap procedure so you bounch back quicker from the surgery? The thing is, on a purely restrictive procedure it's easy to eat (drink) around the surgery if you eat the wrong foods because everything you do eat will be absorbed, so you still have to count calories or watch carbs, or eat low fat or something. But with the malasorption of the BPD/DS, you don't have to count anything. I'm not saying eat a ton of carbs and sweets and stuff because then you won't lose weight. If you can get the BPD/DS in March, if' its a guaranteed thing. This is just my opinion, but the pure restriction surgery (VBG) just didn't work for me.
