The hospital AGAIN

Guess where Max has been since Tuesday? In the hospital. He caught

the ugly stomach bug I had the week before and fought it for a few

days. Then things got bad, so he had to be admitted. Damn it, it's

Saturday and he still cannot keep enough food down to go home.

Despite our best efforts, I think we will have to resort to using

the j-tube starting tomorrow. We cannot keep him in the hospital

forever, so that looks like the only alternative. Max is pretty

upset about this because he was told that he could have the button

removed in a few months if he still continued to not need it. Now

this is a HUGE setback and he will have to start the clock all over

again.

And, as happens with every admission, I had my fight with the

residents last night. Max's IV had to be replaced and the residents

decided that they would not replace it because they believed he was

not eating due to getting too much fluid via IV. How stupid can

they be????? I said if they did that, then by morning he would

surely have moderate ketones and we'd be back to square one all over

again. It was a tough battle, but guess who won??? The nurses were

listening, but trying not to look like they were, and they were

biting their cheeks to keep from laughing. They have known Max for

16 years and they know the routine. Here are these residents who

have never even seen an RSS kid before, telling ME what to do about

it! Sigh. It's so frustrating. Needless to say, the IV went back

in.

So, I'm home for my shower and a nap, then I will return to the

hospital. For any of my local friends, with non-RSS kids, who

question my need to sleep at the hospital with Max, they will hear

this story and be reminded of why I cannot leave him alone

overnight. If I had done that last night, there would have been

disaster this morning.

I am so tired....
