Hi Michele,

We are starting the GFCF diet too. We are having the same problem. My

Son is living on Corn Pops and Potato Chips. He won't drink much water

either. He got a bad cold and was just drinking 7-up. Yesterday I made

his favorite - Sloppy Joes'. We bought Gluten-free buns. He would not

even touch it. Getting it to his mouth was impossible. He has lost 5

pounds. I am really getting worried. Anyone, is this normal.

Thank,

Maureen\

I recently went to a GFCF seminar at my local autism

research center. They told me that if you have a

child with a leaky gut than they will become allergic

to anything they eat on a regular basis. I was

informed about a four day rotation diet. Example: If

my child has chicken nuggets today I can not offer

them again for 4 days or he will become allergic to

them. Is this accurate info? Is anyone else worried

about a 4 day rotation diet or do you just feed you

kid what they will eat? Jasmine

Jasmine

I did a 4 day rotation for almost a year.

I mellowed out over the past year and do a 2 or 3 day rotation.

I spoke to 4 different allergist and for people with very allergic systems

should do a 4 day rotation. For most of our kids a 2 rotation works just

peachy.

There are some great books on why you do it. Let me know if you need da'

list.

Take care,

My daughter's diet opened up, gradually, once she started getting digestive

enzymes. I guess getting better digestion

meant she felt better and could 'stomach' other foods. I never did a rotation,

and she never did develop new allergies

to her daily foods. I think the enzymes may have protected her.

Hi Maureen,

I know how you feel. is turning down old favorites as well. I certainly

hope he doesn't lose weight too; he can't afford to. This morning he did try

a gfcf bagel though, but it sat there a while before he'd touch it. Dinner's

have been the toughest to get down him so far & there's not much he'll eat so

a lot of the recipes don't work with him. I do get upset when I see him

turning down old favorites though, & wonder, like you said, if that's a

normal part of this transition?

Blessings,

Michele

This is pretty typical. He is addicted to the gluten so when you

offer him something without it, he may reject it at first. In time

he will either give up or forget what food used to taste like. I

understand the younger they are, the faster they accept the

substitutes. My suggestion is to make his previous favorites that do

not have the gluten & casein. Make a list of his previous favorites

and stick to ones that either are GFCF or can be made GFCF without a

great difference. Bread/buns are just not the same and will take

some time to get used to. My 2 year old son has been on the diet for

about 2 months. There are some meals that all he eats is a banana or

raisins. Other meals he will eat and eat. The other night I made

some tamale pie which he used to love. I just found out he is

allergic to corn though. What I did is make the filling before

adding corn (ground turkey, green pepper, onion, tomato sauce, chili

powder), set some aside for him then added the corn and cornmeal

topping for the rest of the family. I then served the corn-less

filling to my son on top of rice and the tamale pie to the rest of

the family. He loved it. Maybe you could try the sloppy joe mix on

top of rice or mashed potatoes? My son's other favorites are GFCF

chicken nuggets (from 's book) with tater tots, GFCF pizza

w/ sauce, canadian bacon & pinapple (I don't even try to substitute

cheese - just add lots of toppings), GFCF spaghetti, scrambled eggs

(I might add bacon bits, diced ham, green onions, mushrooms, zucchini

etc. to vary the taste & get veggies in him) and fried rice (using

wheat-free soy sauce). I have tried to give him a PB & J on GFCF bread

but he did not like it. Instead of trying to make it look the same,

I decided to do something different so it is a new thing. I took one

slice of bread, spread peanut butter on it then jelly on to of the

peanut butter. Walla! An open-faced PB & J. He loved it! Tonight I

am going to try mashed potatoes with carrots mashed in. We'll see.

The more I try, the more I can add to his list of foods he will eat.

I also gave up on finding cookies he likes. Instead I give him

jello, Gerber Graduates Fruit Snacks or canned fruit as a treat.

Hang in there. It is tough but well worth it.

My 4 yr old nephew eats only mac and cheese, mini ritz cheese and

crackers, bryan hot dogs, frosted flakes, scrambeld eggs and drinks

geber juices, tea and water. my mom and I are thinking about trying

the diet but don't know how to start and we are afraid he will stop

eating what little he eats now. Any suggestions? I'm only able to

help my mom 2 days a week because I live 3 hours away but I come

weekly. So if I don't get back to answer I will eventually.

Have you started supplementing with zinc? Many of our kids are low in

zinc. It aids with appetite among other things. My son started eating

more and better variety when I introduced it. It should be taken

outside of meals so that it can be absorbed properly.Hope this helps.

I have had my son on the rotation diet for about 14 years.
