Guest guest
Hi Loren... So far Im overwhelmed with all of the information Im getting but so eager to get into it all. What is ASD and NT? I dont even know where to begin yet... Tonite Zack did eat a real dinner with corn, potatoes and chicken... this has never happened before... of course we made the potatoes with milk and butter, but for him it was huge so I am hoping a change to GFCF will be helpful. Thanks Triss
Guest guest
Triss, Welcome, you have joined a wonderful support group. We have been GFCF for about 2 1/2 mos now. It is very frustrating to begin w/but does get easier. My 1st advice is to try not to substitute too many foods, because Zach will probably not like the new version. My son Ross, 5yrs, ASD, had a very limited diet and now he will try almost anything. At first, we tried substituting, but Ross would not eat the new foods at all. We waited a few weeks and re-introduced the foods and he ate them w/no problem. Milk- Ross and younger brother Seth, 2yrs, NT love Dari Free (potato based). We order from www.missroben.com . We order many things from her and are very pleased. All of our flours, her mixes for cakes, crackers, cookies, cereals, etc. To get ross to try new foods was tough at first, but we did it. You have to be consistent and strong. My husband held his arms and I held his face and shoved the food in. We would say try _____ and then take a bite of pudding (he loves). We would have to feed it to him, and then he started feeding himself. Now, we just have to say take a bite of ______ and then you get a bite of ______. It has worked for us. Also, www.kinnikinnick.com is great for breads, bagels, muffins, etc. Ross loves the white sandwich bread. It takes a while for your order to come in, so if Zack likes it then re-order quickly. The have an line that is GFCF (can't remember it now, but you will notice it). Good luck, and remember it will get easier. Guest guest
Triss, ASD = autism spectrum disorder NT = neurological typical (normal child) Definitely get the 's Special Diet for Special Kids book. It explains alot and has wonderful recipes. You can get it www.amazon.com Have you heard of DAN doctors (Defeat Autism Now). They are a group of dr's who have a special interest in autism. Go to www.autism.com/ari/ and scroll down to DAN and it will explain a bunch. I would highly recommend seeing one if you can. butter - organic spectrum found in (HFS- health food store) flours - white rice, potato starch, brown rice are good ones to start w/ milk - Dari Free www.missroben.com sandwich meats, hot dogs, etc - www.applegatefarms.com Also, check out www.gfcfdiets.com. You need to watch out for laundry detergents, shampoo, lotion, soap, etc. Gluten can be absorbed thru the skin. Also, certain school supplies have gluten. don't be afraid to ask questions, feel free to e-mail me personally. Guest guest
NT is the abbreviation for " Nero-typical " , or neurological typical, typically developing, so called normal kid. ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder, also called PDD-NOS, whish is Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Basically saying it's not classic autism, but they don't know what else to call it because it kinda sorta looks autismy, but not exactly. A diagnosis that labels your child with out getting them a label that will actually make them eligible for services. It is confusing, and exhausting. We have all felt just like you feel now; overwhelmed. It gets to be a habit and then a routine and then it's just how you do things and you don't think about it much. Do you have a list of the basic easy stuff you can buy at the grocery store (like Classic Lays potato chips and Classico no cheese spaghetti sauce?) That makes starting out easier. You can branch out from there. Valeri Re: Trying to get started Hi Loren... So far Im overwhelmed with all of the information Im getting but so eager to get into it all. What is ASD and NT? Guest guest
Don't worry, we all get there in time. GFCF is second nature to us after 20 mos. Piece of (gfcf) cake. Now I bake so well that people ask for recipes! www.gfcfdiet.com is perhaps the greatest single resource. Look for the Sunderland link for a protocol for introducing gfcf. Check out the acceptable list of foods for lots of regular supermarket items you can buy. One thing that's very important - you don't how much of a difference this diet can make until you do it 100% for several months. Many kids do go on food strikes when they lose their gluten & casein " fix " - but stick with it. They go through withdrawal and come out healthier, happier, and eating a greater variety of foods. Welcome to the club. I wish you great success and happiness. > Hi Loren... > > So far Im overwhelmed with all of the information Im getting but so eager to > get into it all. > > What is ASD and NT? > > I dont even know where to begin yet... Guest guest
Valeri... No I dont have a list of the basics... I did scan thru the ENTIRE list of food and WOW it is so overwhelming... I would love a list of the basics so I can start thinking of what to add to his diet before I start taking a lot away. I had thoughts on a plan, to add good foods in over the next month or so and to start the actual diet on Jan 1st... that would give me time to add new foods and to get some testing done as well as some more research... Guest guest
... Thanks for the welcome... I tell you things food wise cannot be much worse than they are here... tho they ahve gotten better with us force feeding him better foods... opf course we thought better foods were milk to drink for exapmple which may be hurting him mroe than helping... I have noticed that the last two days he has eaten meat in his diet, he is more energetic... so I know that this will help him... I just dont want to overwhelm him or us overnight...
