Amen Theresa, 4 years ago the only WLS I knew of was the RNY and luckily for me my insurance denied me flat out. Being nieve I simple sat back and did what I need to do to make me qualify for surgery IE: Documented weight loss attempts (incidently no longer a requirement) Anyways after I finally had all the insurance requirements for surgery I started looking again and that is how I learned of the DS. I don't know why I had never seen or heard anything about the DS prior to this year but I am so happy to have found out before I had the RNY. I have seen first hand what that surgery is like. But not knowing of anything else it was my only option I thought. Thats why these groups a so very important. My sister-in-law had the RNY and at first she was miserable. I remember a family get together like 3 months after her surgery and my husband decided to order pizza for everyone. Well she wasn't inside at the time he ordered it and when the pizza's arrived she went balistic " You ordered that pizza on purpose because you knew I couldn't eat any of it without getting sick. " (He actually didn't even remember her having surgery) This is just a small sampling of what she said anyways that is the last time she has ever came to any family gathers at our home. Her husband always has an excuse as to why she can't make it and she even refuses to speak to my husband at other gathers. This all happened 5 years ago. Family members have commented on her gaining back the weight. Needless to say I haven't even told my Husbands family about my upcoming surgery because I don't want them trying to discourage me because of my sister-in-laws experience. Anyways, Unfortunately I also know of a Friends sister who died 9 months after having the RNY. Cause of death, anorexia, she was 84#'s when she died at 32 years old. Even knowing this, if the RNY was the only WLS I knew of I would still have it done and hopefully learn from others mistakes. But of course, Thanks to this site I found out about the DS before I took that route. Thank You ALL BE HAPPY ===== B 36yrs Pre-op 11-13-01 Wt.308 BMI 49 BCBS of MI Blue Choice POS __________________________________________________
