Guest guest
Kylie - I did do aloe vera juice before I went on the diet and it did seem to help me some - when I started the diet (which has helped me much more) I stopped the aloe vera. Obvioulsy though things are really tough for you now and you may want to try anything that could help. I bought mine at a health food store and drank about 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day. Alo, have you ever tried acupuncture? It has helped me alot and I go twice a week. Definitely helped me sleep when I was on steroids. I hope you get some relief soon and am so sorry you are struggling like that. One last thought- can you handle avocado at all? That was an easy one for me (may not be for others) and it has a good amount of fat in it. I struggle with keeping weight on and it can be very scary to get so thin. I eat lots of fatty salmon and ground beef. Again - I hope things start to get better and soon. > > Hi, I am really stuggling right now and would love any suggestions. > I was diagnosed with Crohn's 9/06 when I was 14, and right after I got out of the hospital I went on SCD. Also started Remicade which have been on ever since. I had another bad flare 10/08 which put me in the hospital again. > I began another flare the middle of February and have been having blood, cramping and diarrhea ever since. Doctor put me on prednisone. I have missed more than a month of school and I can't miss much more. I returned to the intro diet and since then I have been eating mainly eggs, plain beef patties, plain chicken, pot roast meat, intro chicken soup with carrots, jello, small amounts of butternut squash with honey. I have lost 30 pounds am extremely skinny and am still losing. The past couple days the cramping seemed a lot better, hadn't had any blood and had a few random loose stools instead of diarrhea. I tried adding in the nut butter brownies using almond butter yesterday to try and gain some weight, but that caused the cramping and blood to return this morning. > Feeling really frustrated right now, and desperate to feel better. I am wondering if anyone has tried aloe vera juice or a product called digestinol - the one with L-Glutamine not soy (previously called molocure)? I know these are not SCD legal, but I am not sure SCD works for me anyway because I am still flaring and it is not connected with eating any illegals. I have heard other people have felt better with these products and I don't know what it could hurt. > Please help! > Thanks, Kylie >
Guest guest
HI Kyile, I'm sorry to hear things are not going well for you. And hope you feel better soon. I was hoping someone more experienced would jump in here (and hope they still will), but as far as The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is concerned, Aloe Vera is illegal and not recommended at all. The Legal/Illegal list at www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info reads: " It contains mucilaginous polysaccharides as well as increasing the release of tumor necrosis factor which is associated with IBD inflammation and increased immune stimulation. " You can read more about it here: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/aloe_vera.htm Sorry I don't have any good suggestions for you. Like I said, I'm new. But I do know that Aloe Vera is a no-no (my dad tried to get me to take it a while back so I had looked into it. Good luck and best wishes with your health. ~CD, SCD 02/21/2010 Kylie - I did do aloe vera juice before I went on the diet and it did seem to help me some - when I started the diet (which has helped me much more) I stopped the aloe vera. Guest guest
Kylie, I think you'll find that all of us understand struggling. You say you are eating eggs plain beef patties plain chicken pot roast meat intro chicken soup with carrots jello butternut squash with honey What else were you eating before you went back on the above for an intro diet? I have to say that adding something like nut butter brownies from the intro is a great way to give yourself cramps and so forth because it is much too rich. First, how are you preparing your eggs? Second, how are you preparing the beef patties, the " plain " chicken, and the pot roast? What is in your jello? Why are you adding honey to butternut squash, which is quite sweet anyway? Instead of adding nut brownies, what about adding some steamed chopped spinach or peeled steamed zucchini? You need to get the vegetables up a bit. I would avoid aloe vera and that blasted molocure like it was the plague. Both feed the bad bacteria in your gut, both are expensive. The reason you " feel better " is because it feeds the bacteria, and they're happy for awhile. It's not a long-term solution. We all want to feel better now. Yesterday would be good, too. There's a tendency to want to throw this supplement and that product at our illness and when something doesn't work in two or three days, we're on to the next product or supplement. Healing takes time -- something none of us want to hear. SCD works. But you need to understand why it works so you can implement it properly. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Hi Kylie, I am so sorry you are having such a time. It's a real detective story we all play here, finding what foods work for us at a given time. I would suggest you might consider backing off on the brownies, if you have nut flour in them. Just keep the almond butter if it's OK. I get along fine with almond and pecan butters, did from the very beginning, but even almost 9 months later and a number of biggie improvements in my food list, I really can't handle whole or chopped nuts or even nut flour yet. Just the butters. For calories, can you manage things like avocado, or olive oil? Coconut oil? Adding more fat calories should help your weight when you can handle them. It doesn't sound like you have much fat in the diet right now.
