Guest guest
Short story: We had tried to take our son off gluten and casein twice before we committed totally to the diet. We did not notice a significant change either time. We had his peptide levels tested and they were the highest the doc has ever seen! Gluten tested at 185, and casein at " over 200. " They didn't even give an exact measure for the casein, it was so high....and he was mostly off casein at the time of the test! Now I am beginning to see addict behaviors (we are about 2 months gfcf). The other day, there were some leftover french fries from a fast food restaurant left on the table from a lunch I had with my younger son. I threw them away in the bottom of the garbage. My autistic son (age 8) came in to the house from outside to go to the bathroom. On the way back out the dining room sliding glass door, he must have smelled them. In about two seconds flat he was under the sink, with his head in the garbage, and had already swallowed a fry! It was so fast it made my head spin! He is a kid where " out of sight, out of mind " usually holds true. Poor kid was eating out of the trash! Thankfully at least it had a new trash bag in it and was relatively clean still. I am amazed at the things they will do to get their fix. Guest guest
Hi Amy, I hope you'll put up with me a moment. My son is not autistic, but may be somewhere in the spectrum. The only dx we have is Microcephaly w/motor & speech delays. Our OT is the one who suggested we have him tested for Gluten & Casein intolerance's. Like your son, our son's results were very high. He is 5yrs old and only says about 8 words. He has been on this diet since mid June. I get confused with all the probiotics and everything everyone mentions here and wonder if I should have my son on these as well. Currently, EnzymeAid is the only additional thing we've added. He has eaten " forbidden " foods without enzymes and without showing any signs of it. This is what confuses me. Should he be or not? Is the behavior only an Autistic trait? Or is he maybe not free of all the " built " up peptides yet and therefor not showing any signs. Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Rhonda of Calif Mom to
Guest guest
Amy - I am so glad I read your post. My son has been GFCF for about 3 weeks. I have been struggling with what snack foods I can send with my son that he will eat. I am told he is determined to get whatever the other kids have. I thought it was because I just have not yet found the snacks he likes. I now realize that it is because he wants his fix. This also encourages me to know this is a passing phase. Now I can relax and know whatever snack I send him will not be what he wants but it is not my fault! > Short story: > We had tried to take our son off gluten and casein twice before we > committed totally to the diet.
