Guest guest
If there are ketones in his body, it means that he does not have enough glycogen storage and he IS burning fat/muscle. No getting around that. Did you test him in the morning after he had slept all night? If so, your first round of defense is to ensure that you are giving him a tablespoon of cornstarch mixed in his bedtime milk/formula (the article in the MAGIC library from Dr. H explains all this, if you don' thave it yet). If he was tested later in the day, and still had ketones, he needs more complex carbohydates more often. It may simply be that what he is eating doesn't have enough complex carbohydrates and hence he begins to spill ketones. He is so underweight to begin with (remember I told you that Dr. H told me at the convention to take his photo as he was one of the most underweight kids she had as a patient). The proteins are AWESOME, and will help stabilize his blood sugars. But he still needs complex carbos or else he will spill ketones. Let me know what time you tested him. KEEP testing him regularly. It is very important for his neurological development that he not spill ketones or get hypoglycemic. Keep us posted. CONGRATS on the weight gain!!! As he gains weight and his head becomes more in proportion to his body/weight, the ketone spilling/risk of hypoglycemia does decrease, if that makes you feel any better. Salem > Hi everyone, > I have been reading a lot and following the " diet " discussions, but have not written lately. I have a few questions if anyone can please help. > > As some of you know, Jonah did not do well with weight at our last visit to Dr. H and she has given us until April for him to gain. Well, recently he starting throwing up when he gets upset. Because it happened twice on Sunday, we thought about calling Dr.H. and going to see her before April to get things rolling. Well, I took Jonah for a weight check on Monday and he gained 1lbs and 3 ounces in a month a half! We were thrilled and decided to hold off calling her. Luckily he has not thrown up since then. Dr. H. told us to increase his formula to 24 calories an once and we add heavy cream; I assume this has helped with the weight gain, but may also be causing the vomiting. Would you all agree? Jonah eats quite a bit of protein like meats and fish and hummus, but also likes fruit, potatoes and pasta. Is so much heavy cream dangerous for his cholesterol? > > I also wanted to ask about KETONES. Sometimes I notice an alcohol like smell on his breath (like when kids are sick) and his pediatrician said that could be from dehydration or he may be spilling ketones. Has anyone had any experience with this smell? I checked his urine today and is did seem to indicate that there were low to moderate amounts in his urine. We try to feed him pretty regularly, so what can be causing this? > > Sorry this is so long, I just need some expert advice. > Thank, > , Jonah's mom > >
Guest guest
- I can't speak for Dr. H, but I am guessing that because he is a good eater, she wanted to try every other option first. I know that when we went to her the first time was almost 5 yrs old and 27 lbs. Docs here in CA wanted a g-tube. She said to us that she would never use a g-tube on a child who can eat well without trying everything else first. She gave us a list of complex carbs she wanted us to try every other eating had -- in 3 months she gained 3 pounds to 30 pounds! Then flattended out again. Then we started the Periactin, and that has been the only way since starting GH and growing so much in height that she has been able to stay off a tube. We have good times and bad. I noticed this afternoon that she has that " facial " look again, when she gets too thin and her jaw bones stick out of her face.... Jenn > I want to thank everyone for their e-mails, what a great support system! Dayna, Alyssa's situation is almost identical to Jonah's, wow! The pediatrician said just what you said. I tested him late in the day, so I think , you may be right about him not getting enough complex carbs. Why do you think since he is so underweight does she keep giving us time instead of an immediate feeding tube? I guess I should have asked her that.I always assumed it was because he did eat. It just seems odd when you think that he is the most underweight patient she has had. What do you think ? > We always do put corn starch in a bottle before bed and still wake him up in the middle of the night for another. > , I do hope to see you at the convention this summer, we are planning on going. > Thank you to everyone. > , Jonah's mom > >
